Chik-Fil-A and tolerance

It all started with this quote from Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-a's President:
We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that. We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families; some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that. We intend to stay the course. We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.
Chick-fil-a and the Irony of the Tolerance Police | Denny Burk

Now there are calls for boycotts, some folks are protesting, two mayors are coming out against the company. Here's Boston's mayor:
Mumbles said:
“Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion,” Menino told the Herald yesterday.
“That’s the Freedom Trail. That’s where it all started right here. And we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail.
...
“If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult — unless they open up their policies,” he warned
Mayor Menino on Chick-fil-A: Stuff it - BostonHerald.com

And in Chicago:
Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago values. They’re not respectful of our residents, our neighbors and our family members, and if you’re going to be part of the Chicago community, you should reflect the Chicago values
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Scores An Ethics Alarms Hat Trick: “Ethics Dunce,” “Incompetent Elected Official of the Month,” and “Unethical Quote of the Week” | Ethics Alarms

But what if it was:

"Islam's values are not Chicago's values."

"Islam doesn't belong in Boston."

If any elected official had made comments such as those, he would have been ridden out of town on a rail — especially if he happened to be a conservative Republican. Yet two big-city mayors have said the functional equivalent, and so far their remarks have elicited only a bit of tut-tutting.
Chick-fil-A: (In)tolerance | Richmond Times-Dispatch

More tolerance found within the ACLU:
I encourage all bigots to load up on transfats and carbohydrates. Go ahead — eat your heart out on the “Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit” breakfast! Mmmm.”
ACLU official wants Chick-fil-A supporters to gorge on transfats | The Daily Caller

So what does tolerance really mean to the left? Is it toleration of all ideas and points of view or is it tolerance of ideas and points of view that agree with theirs only?

This is just one example of why I think most liberals are hypocrites.

Tolerance:

1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.

3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.

Now show me a regressive/conservative's interest in what the "other side" has to say. Then contemplate the word hypocrite.

1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

your first list omitted item #4 (most likely due to simple oversite, no nefarious motives assumed) ;)

the act or capacity of enduring; endurance: My tolerance of noise is limited.

It appears this is putting feet to theory. Interestingly it also appears to be missing from the 2 mayors' and the ACLU leader's actions.

Wonder what they would say if the homosexuals staged a kiss-in in front of a Mosque - they kill homosexuals - I wonder if they would agree with that. Government should tend to the business they are suppose to, they are so busy sticking their noses into things that they are not suppose to govern and ignore what they should be governing.

All those in favor of one man one woman union go out and support chick fil a, it can work both ways as it is free to choose as the right to speak is free as well for all unless of course there are those who wish to limit speech to what they agree with

It all started with this quote from Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-a's President:

Strange I seem to see it starting when it was revealed Chick-fil-a donated $5million to the anti gay marriage groups like NOM (you know the ones who always insist on companies staying neutral and have at least 2 active boycotts on the go right now)

And then the comments from the Dan Cathy about gays invoking Gods wrath on America.

I wonder if Rahm even knows he's Chick-Fil-A's bag man?

Oh... As a leftist I endure. Trust me on that. After all, I keep returning to this place, don't I? :p

I support gay marriage and I still got a spicy chicken biscuit this morning.

Hypocrisy is delicious!

Jon Stewart, as usual, had a revealing skit on this idea.

If you're against the things corporations sometimes do politically, you're going to limit yourself a *whole lot* in what you can use. No iPods if you're a consevative, no chicken sandwiches if you're liberal. Among many other things.

Let corporations do what the heck they want. We're all shrooming anyways if we forget that Cathy wouldn't have said a thing if he didn't think it had a chance of affecting (in a positive way) his sales. Intentionally making controversial statements just about the stupidest thing you can do when you have the choice not to and you're the head of a huge corporation. So Cathy is either a horrible businessman (reality check: look where he's at now), or it was all a PR move. And I have no respect for that, even if I didn't support gay marriage.

You do realize that he was saying that to a Baptist magazine/newsletter right? Kind of where you'd expect people to invoke God. :doh1:

So if he makes a racist comment we have to overlook its content so long as it was said among friends who agree?

Why shouldn't liberals and supporters of gay rights boycott a company that says in private or public that they are the summoning gods wrath?

Boycotts are the American Way of expressing displeasure with a corporation. I support anyone's right to organize boycotts.

But I am NOT in favor of mayors (or any government entity) trying to curb a business from operating just because they don't like that corporations stance on a social issue.

Seconded.
