Chicken Pox

I think my son has them ... My MIL was dressing him and she noticed some bumps on him, that look like little red blisters, well there were only 2 of them, and today I noticed about 3 more that have popped up

Well after looking at pictures of chickenpox that is what it looks like very much so... Though his isn't itching, maybe it isn't itching because he has eczema and the creams I use for that is helping? He has like 6 or 7 blisters, and thats about it...

How do you know when he is over them? I mean like when its not contagious?

BTW He has had his Chicken Pox shot.

are you going to take him to the doctor just to have a check up?

I don't know know much about chickenpox from the parent's perspective yet, I think chickenpox lasts for a couple weeks (it did for me when I had them as a kid). and I heard those immunizations for chickenpox had some problems, that's terrible if he has them. Sorry I can't help much. I would maybe google it for more info

My understanding is that they are contagious up until the spots scab over and stop weeping (and also prior to the spots appearing, but there is no way of telling then).

If he has had his shot, it may be a reaction to that (a very mild case of chicken pox - how long ago was his shot?). Even after having shots, kids can still get a milder version of the disease. It might be worth checking with a doctor to confirm though.

I would take him to the doc for confirmation. I was just about positive when DS got them, but it was nice to know for sure, and now I've seen them "in the flesh" I will always recognise them.

Supposedly you can still get a mild form even with the vaccine, I know of children who did. That might be why he only has a few spots, but all children do react differently, with some getting it worse than others.

Child is definitely contagious until the last spot has crusted over, this usually takes about a week from that spot appearing (so if the spots take 3 days to fully appear, from the time of the last spot it is about a week).

Regarding itching- the itch may be kept at bay by his cream, but also it takes a few days before the itch starts.

edit to add: until you know for sure, keep him away from other children as well as vulnerable adults esp pregnant women (very dangerous if the mum gets it in the first trimester)

I'd take him in for confirmation too, since he had the chicken pox vaccine his case should be less severe.

It is for sure the pox... they are already starting to scab over, but he is still running fever...

It takes chicken pox a few days to show the full effects. I had them when i was 20. The doctor wasn't able to do much for me other than tell me i had chicken pox. It is contagious until all the pox scab over, this takes a week to two weeks - it might be more for children. The doctor gave me a cream but it did not help with itching. What helped was soaking in Aveno oatmeal baths and then dabbing on vitamin E oil right afterwards. The vitamin E oil helped to take away the sting of the pox and it helps prevent scarring.

I know of lots of children who have had vaccine for chicken pox and still got the pox. It is generally a milder version.

My doctor said as a guide they are contagious for 10 - 14 days from the day the spots appear (they are actually contagious before this and if you have been in contact with any pregnant women you need to let them know because chicken pox can be dangerous for unborn babies or so I have heard)

I know that when ds had them he was told not to go back to pre-school for 2 weeks.

Also the cream for excema will probably help the itching, so if it's working I would keep using it.


I am glad he doesn't have a severe case.

My ds had them at 4, dd got them after he had them (she was 13 - 14 months) and she had them really really badly.

She still has scars, she had them inside her nappy area, inside her mouth, she had them EVERYWHERE. She even had them on her eyelid and had to have antibacterial drops put on that one, so it didn't get infected or cause eye problems.

He seems to be feeling better right now, but he has had a few more places pop up. At night is when he starts feeling his worse.
