Just saw this article: Google engineer says humans are on the cusp of immortality

Well, I only read the headline "Google engineer says humans can cheat death – we just have to merge with AI"

You see, it strikes me as a futile endeavour. We'd lose our subjective experience and death is something I look forward too.

Jesus promises Revelation 2:17 . It sounds so precious. Isaiah 62:2-3 says similar.

Home sounds great:
Philippians 3:20-21
2 Corinthians 5:1-2

The above headline sounds empty.

Your thoughts?

There are those who wish to become gods or see themselves in that light who adhere to teachings that promote the idea of a merging of opposites. Some have suggested doing so by uploading their consciousness to a hard drive of sorts that would allow them to transfer it into a different host. Such as a humanoid robot for example. I don’t believe that technology is ethical in the biblical sense. But I’d make a similar suggestion regarding the neuralink in spite of the benefits others tout. There has to be a line and when we tinker with ourselves beyond our humanity we’ve gone too far.

Rest assured, there will be many who’ll get on board and I’ve read comments along these lines from others. I don’t believe we’re getting all the information concerning ai or its capabilities. Nor do I feel we’ll have the same about this procedure until it’s too late. This is why we must make our position sure before temptation comes. Many people rarely question anything and believe what they hear and are easily misled. Technology will be the undoing for most. They don’t look before they leap or count the cost.

For people will be lovers of self [narcissistic, self-focused], lovers of money [impelled by greed], boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane, [and they will be] unloving [devoid of natural human affection, calloused and inhumane], irreconcilable, malicious gossips, devoid of self-control [intemperate, immoral], brutal, haters of good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of [sensual] pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of [outward] godliness (religion), although they have denied its power [for their conduct nullifies their claim of faith]. Avoid such people and keep far away from them.

Thank you for that well put together contribution. Agree wholly with you. The first part brought to mind the thought that this is a modern day 'tower of Babel'. Humanity hasn't changed much at it's core. A very apt verse at the end too.

Thank you for the compliment. I was pointing in that direction with my response. ;-)

We don't die anyway, we are immortal, life just pauses for a bit maybe.
So this is pointless, suppose they find a way to maintain your body alive forever, sooner or later, the world is going to end and all of us need to meet God.

Yes, I can't see the appeal for a Christian of merging with tech.

I can't imagine the appeal for the atheist eiter Especially in that way. The AI would only imitate them, there is no living longer involved. The best I can see is them wanting some sort of presence left after the grave. Not one they'd even experience in that way. But they'd be only a presence to strangers or other AI's?

I just keep thinking of the opening of Ecclesiastes about it all being 'vanity' or 'meaningless'. It makes me think of my own life and opinions. They're all meaningless as everyone I know passes away. The only things of substance being those that would be works for God given by Him and through Him.

The appeal is there if there is continuity of consciousness. If it’s just a facsimile cobbled together and there is no continuity of consciousness it’s a bit pointless.

Perhaps it could appeal to the more narcissistic who might want a copy of themselves to continue after them. Perhaps grieving relatives would want that... hmm that could end up their marketing strategy and a reason to continue their attempts. It would still be an empty comfort to the living.

For me, personally, Christ offers my comfort in grief.

I've had strange supernatural experiences in the past where during a dream or involuntary trance, I saw myself entering my phone in spirit or w/e. 2010 model Samsung galaxy phone.

The experience did not end there after I woke up. At the same time, the phone also began doing things on its own at a rapid pace. Apps opening and closing on its own, the phone itself turn on and off on its own. My dad also saw my phone acting possessed and suggested to have it fixed

The first time I noticed these things happening was late 90's. My strong emotions would cause computers around me to randomly malfunction and even cause damage due to electrical surges.

I have some sort of interaction like viewing through live feed cameras but highly selective during dream state and physically interacting with computer parts.

What's even more interesting, the interactions stopped when my Samsung phone stopped working and move on to a Vivo phone. I have no preference towards my old Samsung phone. These phones are all the same to me. Maybe I distrust the Vivo phone a bit in terms of data security.

How the digital world looks like? It's just black space with abstract images or virtual objects. Like a trippy music video from the 90's.

I don't think it's limited to digital devices. I think my mind is simply trying to reach out to anything, even plants and animals. My mind is most especially strongly reaching out to certain species of spiders like the big Huntsman species, "Phlocidae", and other species I can't identify.

I can actually rid a wide area of these spiders by simply staying in. I seem psionically linked to these spiders but somewhat hurts or repels them.

The presence of these spiders also gives me dreams and some of the dreams have been really nice even though involving interacting with giant sized spiders in these dreams. It makes you think about Native American beliefs on spiders and dreams may have a basis in reality.

In essence, I can reliably rid an area of certain spiders. I can also reliably detect their presence even if they are well hidden. The mind reaching out. I suppose, it's also attempting to spread to try to live forever.

I dunno. I'm really narcissistic and it would drive me nuts if I knew an AI of me was out there reaping praise that I thought was mine. But the issue about having a golem of you and actually experiencing being conscious in an artificial brain are two very different things.

Even today you can use social media data scrapes (if you have enough) to make an artificial personality construct.

I'd only be interested in this is there was continuity of consciousness. Otherwise your still dead so who cares?

Well, maybe you're not pathologically narcissistic. I would think it takes grandiosity to think one's presence was worth preserving after one's cessation of conscious experience on Earth. Perhaps I was wrong though, because there is nothing to gain other than knowing they'd be remembered in some shape or form.

Thanks for your input. It's appreciated

Say you were to clone your thoughts using a living model of scripture, this second self became like a ghost when you passed away. It's the same as with an AI taking on your personality, it's just a ghost, but you're still dead.

But that’s my point. It’s NOT you. It’s a flawed imitation. I’d be furious know it was up and about (metaphorically) while I was in the ground; a thing of non existence.

I can imagine using some new tech like for example nanobots cleaning our arteries or checking we have no cancer in our colon, cleaning us from microplastics etc.

Regarding merging with some tech, either becoming a cyborg or being just copied to some server, it will not be acceptable for the most of people, I guess. No matter which religion or whether none religion.

Sign me up for both if it means I genuinely go on for ever.

We would need to redefine "I", after such merge.

I think it is a better way to find biological anti-aging therapies than to become something else than humans.

The article in the OP only offers to make a working copy of a person. It makes no promise to keep the original person alive.
It is no different than how people live on through their
  • films,
  • videos,
  • audio recordings,
  • writings,
  • art,
  • architecture,
  • inventions, and
  • other accomplishments.
It is little more than an echo.

There is a thought experiment, going like this: If I took one of your neurons and replaced it with silicon-based one, is it still you? If yes, what about two, three...etc till all your body is silicon based.

Is there a precise moment in which you cease to be you?
