That goes back to the argument of whether the mind is an artifact of the brain or if one's soul transcends one's brain. There is a thought experiment, going like this: If I took one of your neurons and replaced it with silicon-based one, is it still you? If yes, what about two, three...etc till all your body is silicon based.
Is there a precise moment in which you cease to be you?
That argument is tied to related arguments,
- Mechanism vs. Vitalism &
- Evolution vs. Intelligent Design.
That the more agency we give machines, they will develop identities and associated subjective preferences (proving once and for all the meat-mind hypothesis).
I believe that AI research will, in fact, "prove" the opposite. They might even duplicate the brain, but the mind/soul will be absent.
Even identical twins show that duplicate brains do not produce duplicate minds...
Brains amount to organic PLCs.
