The bible was given for our use and guidance today... Therefore we should follow it, as it is God's word!

Does anyone else agree with me that we should not say anything, give opinions, or disagree with someone without first finding Chapter and Verse to back it up.... This is something we do in my family during our bible studies and in life... If we ever come to disagreement or aren't sure about something someone has said, we just yell out CHAPTER AND VERSE, we all have a laugh, but I feel it is something everyone should do... Back it up with the bible!!!

Anyones thoughts on this? I thought perhaps we could discuss some 'contentious' topics simply by quoting chapter and verse to back up our opinions... Things like predestination, dinosaurs, evolution, ummm... i dunno... any thoughts anyone?

Can I disagree with you a little without having a chapter and verse to back me up? ;)

Actually I sort of agree but sort of disagree. The problem with "chapter and verse" is that single verses, if taken out of context, can really muddy the issues. Nearly any opinion on any topic could conceivable be supported using "chapter and verse." We all need to be careful to view every verse within the whole of scripture. And even then, Christians certainly don't come to perfect agreement (ie on issues such as baptism necessary for salvation, OSAS, pre/mid/post-trib, tongues, etc.). It just becomes a game of "scripture ping-pong."

I disagree. It's OK to express your own personal opinion, so long as you admit it's your personal opinion.

Recently, I've seen quite a few members discount others' thoughts just because they were expressed in a post that did not also contain a quotation of scripture, even if they are discussing interpretation of a scripture someone else just posted. This is nuts!

As long as you are not stating your opinion as doctrine then it is okay not to give chaper and verse. A lot of times I will recall something from a sermon or studies and not remeber where it came from. In order to back up everything I comment on I would have to carry my Bible and a Strong's Conc. around with me everywhere I go.

I don't think God intended for us to memorize the Bible, although, how cool would that be.
