  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I attend a church called Disciples of Christ, which is somehow associated with a church known as the Church of Christ. I listed my affiliation as other because neither of these names is on the list of churches.

I want to know about fundamentalists. They have a major interest in Darwin and natural selection. The AP American History textbook uses their interest in Darwin as a defining quality.

I'm wondering what Darwin has to do with Christianity. He appears to me to have been an Atheist.

Yes, I think that is correct. As near as I can tell, Darwin had no interest in religion, but Fundamentalists have a lot of interest in Darwin. For example, I went to a Sunday School with my great grandson where he learned that Darwin contradicted the Genesis version of creation.

As near as I can tell, with one exception, Darwin never mentioned religion in his books.

Charles Darwin was not an atheist. He started as a Unitarian and became passionate about science specifically because of natural theology. He had both ties and some support within the Church of England. The Theory of Evolution did eventually drive him into agnosticism, but for most of his life, he was very much what you would expect of a 19th century deist.
