Why not?

the aircraft was amde to take off from an aircraft carrier, fire its missiles and return to the aircraft carrier. That was the extent of its combat intended use. It was not designed for actual fighter vs fighter combat.
I cannot respect a fighter aircraft designed to avoid fighting....

Maybe because it was overhyped? Was good as a long range intercept (mostly because of the missile suite) but was thirsty and handled like a broken down tank.

Top Gun made it look better than it was.
