However, if the birth of the kittens causes medical damage to the momma or even kills the momma, in the case of a young cat getting pregnant on her first heat, which is more important, the life of the kittens or the life of the momma when you know it could have been prevented. No, abortions do not cause cancer in cats. Once the cat has been spayed, it no longer produces estrogen, which is what feeds breast cancer. If the animal has the genes for breast cancer, nothing we do or not do will prevent the cancer. I worked as a vet tech for 4 years. I never once saw a case of breast cancer in a dog or cat that had been spayed.
Thanks, kami.
This is why I posed this question as there is a scientific link between abortions and breast cancer, so I wanted to also know if that link existed with cats and dogs.
However, many spayed and neutered cats do have a problem with being overweight, don't they? I mean, they are not running around seeking the opposite sex. And do not fat cells also produce estrogen? Research says yes. And people and animals with excess fat cells do show a tendency to have a shortened lifespan due to diabetes and heart problems.
