  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, recently I found an onion that had lil green things growing at its top so I stuck it partially in a cup of water and now the green things are about a foot tall. Then, I found a potato that had..stuff...growing from it and I also placed it partially in water. Now, you're probably wonderding what on earth this has to do with carrots. I noticed our carrots in the fridge and was wondering it one would grow if I stuck it in water like the other two. I really don't know anything about carrots other than they taste great, so I don't know if they'd grow by sticking one in water. Would it?

What you have are sprouts. You'll grow the green part, but not a whole new plant.

The onion is the bulb--root--part of the plant, and the potato is the tuber (root). You can grow more potatoes from one potato; cut the potato in chunks, making sure you have an "eye" (where it sprouts from). Plant this is good garden soil, "eye" up. Let it grow until the green, leafy part wilts and falls over (summer). Then dig up your potato plants!

You can grow carrot tops--cut off the top of the carrot, and place it on a moist paper towel in a saucer. Keep the towel moist. The carrot will grow a green top. However, you will not get a new carrot root.

Thanks, that's great to know.
Maybe sometime I'll actually grow some veggies (like when I have a place to put them), but for now I'm just enjoying growing their sprouts. I enjoy watching plants grow and trying to keep them alive (which I don't have a lot of success with).

Try Basil or some other herb on a window sill. If you are not good at watering on time (I'm not), use one of the pots which has a pour spout on the side and an elevated ledge inside to raise the plants roots above the water. Neat design - can't drown so over watering is best. Hope that helps. I hope my kids get into gardening.

The (main) problem with growing things right now is my family is in a transition period. We're in a small house and most of our stuff is in storage and I don't have any pots or anything and I have no room. Everything I grow has to go on the kitchen table and I don't have any basil or anything. Also, we might be moving to Georgia in a month or two and I don't want to buy some things and then have to stop them when we move. I'm going to try the carrot top, my mom cut carrots to put in the stew tonight so I saved one of the top. My potato didn't grow so I threw it away, it smelled bad. My onion seems to be wilting....
