Do you think that having a career is compatible with having a large family? I'm talking practically, more than spiritually.

DH and I have always hoped for a large family, though we're not exactly quiverfull (I think I may be a closet/borderline quiverfull ^_^). But the past few months I have really started to feel that I should have a career as well as a family. I have decided to try to go back to further study in '09 in the hope that this could lead me further down my career path. This decision is not based on money because a little bit of poor doesn't bother me and I know that God will provide for our family. Rather, I feel like part of my vocation is to work. What do you think?

I guess it would depend on what career that was. I read/hear of plenty of women who have 4, 5, 6 children and work full time.

Personally, there's no way. I love being a SAHM, and I think even a part time job would cause things to suffer at home. Of course I don't know unless I try, but I haven't felt any promptings from God in that direction. :)

I can easily see how having a large family and having a home-based business could go hand-in-hand. In fact I've run across Several moms of many who do that (and they make a decent living at it too).

I honestly don't think that working outside of the house and having a large family would work though... I'm sure some Make it work because they Have to, but I just can't see it as the ideal.

I agree. I think it would be rather expensive with several in childcare as well.

Personally I am against day care and believe that children belong with one of their parents as the main caregiver... and between DH and I, I felt called to be home... so this works for us.

I don't know, I'm sure God could make it work...

But, if you are feeling called to continue your studies, then go for it, you have no idea what God could do with it further down the track - whether it is a full blown career or not...

Personally, I'm with Leanna, and I'll happily be staying home...

I went to work in our own business about 13 years ago, because we couldn't afford to pay for a secretary. As we don't believe in day care, I had three children coming to work with me everyday. Sometimes my DH would take the day off the keep the children at home, but that was rare. Then I fell with our seventh, worked up till the day she was born, and then back to work three weeks later. She also came to work with me everyday. Weekend were spent catching up on house work, and putting some meals away for the week. It was go, go, go, and a very intense time. Finally we brought the business home, and that was a breath of fresh air and a wonderful relief.
To this day we still run our business from home, and I also am starting up my own business from home.

Personally I don't see how a mother of many could work continually away from the home, as I found the children suffer, and any free time is catchup time with house hold jobs. There is little play or fun times. For a mother to work from the home, we have found to be very successful. Still needs a lot of organising, but is much more do'able than the other option.
