  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, that's so true. We should go back to symbols like the fish. In the catacombs under Rome where the early christians lived, died and were buried during the persecutions, they found in the digs not one cross painted on any of the walls. They found pics of fish, and picks of the Shepherd with lambs and kids. Not one cross. The cross to them was not a good symbol, even if Jesus died on one. They apparently chose to have symbols of life. Crosses were also not used until the middle ages.

I find this obsession with crosses gross, especially by Christians.

In my opinion, if we are to display a cross it should be with respect--the cookie cutter cross and chocolate cross for Easter makes me believe Christianity has been cheapened.

I agree a fish or sheep is uplifting--for some though remembering Christ's sacrafice is important.

Sure, I wear a gold cross. I just think to much emphasis is placed on crosses, and it's cheapened.

The ultimate of tacky...why would someone want to eat a cross?

To begin with it was something used for execution.

A cross should be displayed with respect on a wall, not on a key chain, not as candy, not as a cookie.

I think we need to go back to what the early Christians had as a symbol, a fish...
Youre only looking skin deep at a problem that is at the heart.

Joh 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
Joh 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
Joh 2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
Joh 2:17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

And even this is just a symptom of the real problem!

I personally see nothing wrong with crosses on key chains and I have one on my key chain. My RCIA sponsor got it for me as a gift when I entered in to full communion with the Catholic Church. :)

If we are to hold respect for flags--not let a flag touch the ground, only display it at night with a spot light on it-then I think we can have more respect for a cross.

I don't know about you--but I throw my keys around. then I would be throwing the cross around.

Can you expand on that please. I think I know what you are saying.

Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Respect is not a bad thing--if we are to not let a flag touch the ground why in the world would we make a cookie into a cross or chocolate?
there is a difference in respect than holding something in reverence , liken it to some holy object , that has been made with hands of man.
The flag is a symbol of remembrance and the respect of that is a good thing. But the flag in its self is not s holy cloth. The cross is a symbol of remembrance , but in itself it isn't a holy object . I hope I am making myself clear.
I wear a cross my son gave me years ago. It is a precious gift , given in love, and it is a remembrance for what my God did for me personal.

But making a cross into candy-much like a chocolate Easter Bunny seems trivializing to me.

We can make more into most all things.
Frankly , I would rather see much more crosses on easter than I would a bunny or eggs, far closer to truth to explain a candy cross to a child on that day , than to tell a tall tale of a bunny hiding easter eggs , go figure. ;)
