and at least for me its refreshing to sing and have my 5yr ol boy sing right along with me.

When I was 5 I liked many of the hymns a lot better than the praise songs. I remember talking with one of my friends at church saying that we both enjoyed the older songs better. We may have been nerds in our tastes, but being cool  means being accepted by the world, and ...

John 15:19
"If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you" ;)

So, it's kind of better to not be of the world in terms of worship style.

I prefer hymns, too. Unfortunately, our church only performs contemporary songs. And they like to do the repetition thing. Oh well, I'm too busy running the sound board to really pay much attention, anyway. As long as it sounds good, my job is done.

I remember hearing about a band that played a song and the song contained only one word "Jesus". When the singer was done, he said "that song really spoke to me".

I guess that song would speak to me also if I mediated on spiritual things and the Holy Spirit was convicting me at the time.

That makes me gag. Modern church worship—big on "experience," void in fruit.
(Jn. 14:15 AV) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

(Mt. 6:7 AV) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

I am starting to love hymns more and more. When I was young, I couldn't stand hymns, and that carried through my middle school and high school years (wow, I feel old now, hehe).
Anyways, as of recently, I am starting to love hymns. I actually enjoy some modern songs that are "toned down," so to speak.

That is for sure, I've heard preacher sound outstanding - until you actually thought about what they said  then I wanted to vomit.

That is actually what just caused my family to start a 45 minute bus ride to our new church. The one that i was formerly attending was big on nothing. Church was all about the show, not the substance. The new one still does contemporary worhsip, with some hymms mixed in, and lasts close to 3 hours because the pastor just goes on his topic until he is done. He did a full "sermon" on the 1st 3rd of the Lords Prayer recently. Was almost 1 1/2 hours long, and was sound teaching. I was so happy after the place we were going.

Well, 2 questions then, what do you consider important to worship?
(Jn. 4:24 AV) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

And also, just what are u referring to as worship?
The modern interpretation of it. That is, the seemingly unending droning of contemporary worship songs.

How's this for a comparison!

The differences between Hymns and Praise music:

An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was. "Well," said the farmer, "It was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns."

"Praise choruses," said his wife, "What are those?"

"Oh, they're okay. They're sort of like hymns, only different," said the farmer.

"Well, what's the difference?" asked his wife.

The farmer said, "Well, it's like this - If I were to say to you: Martha, the cows are in the corn,' well, that would be a hymn. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you:

Martha Martha, Martha, Oh, Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA,
the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows,
the white cows, the black and white cows,
the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn,
are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn,
the CORN, CORN, CORN
,
then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well that would be a praise chorus."

As luck would have it, the exact same Sunday a young, new Christian from the city church attended the small town church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was. "Well," said the young man, "It was good. They did something different, however. They sang hymns instead of regular songs."

"Hymns," said his wife, "What are those?"

"Oh, they're okay. They're sort of like regular songs, only different," said the young man.

"Well, what's the difference?" asked his wife.

The young man said, "Well it's like this - If I were to say to you, Martha, the cows are in the corn,' well, that would be a regular song. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you:

Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry
Inclines thine ear to the words of my mouth.
Turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by
To the righteous, inimitable, glorious truth.
For the way of the animals who can explain
There in their heads is no shadow of sense,
Hearkenest they in God's sun or his rain
Unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.
Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight,
Have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed.
Then goaded by minions of darkness and night
They all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn have chewed.
So look to that bright shining day by and by,
Where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn.
Where no vicious animal makes my soul cry
And I no longer see those foul cows in the corn.

Then, if I were to do only verses one, three and four and do a key change on
the last verse, well that would be a hymn."

I'd only ever heard the first part of that story. The second part is how they view us!
