Interesting. Hypothetically, if one would receive absolution from confession and then instantaneously die, would that person go to purgatory (according to the Roman Catholic teaching)?
Good question. Possibly, they could go to heaven or not depending on how many attachments or addictions to sin in ones will and soul one has after he dies. So eternal punishments(hell or eternal damnation) is remitted completely at absolution(even if one never does penance) but temporary punishments or complete sanctification(what Catholics call the process of purgatory) may still be needed to enter heaven as nothing impure can enter heaven and be in Gods presence (Rev 21:27). So if this happens in our understanding they will suffer loss ie the loss of their attachments and God will purify them/purge or sanctify them completely of these attachments in a Holy fire of his love(1 Cor 3:15) so they then can then enter the glories of heaven and be with Him in the most personal communion(we call it beatific vision) according to official Catholic(both Roman/western and Eastern) theology. I hope that helps.
