I'm sorry to say, but this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on this forum ^_^ I'm sorry to hear about these bad things you have encountered but to claim that a liking to heavy metal is behind it all.. -.-

I can understand why you think my post is 'ridiculous' - you have not bothered to read it. You have made assumptions about what you 'think' you read - which I find pretty ridiculous.

I made no such claim that 'heavy metal is behind it all'. Now do yourself a favour and go back and read my post - all of it.

What I said was that heavy mental is an enticer - 'come on' - a puller. It is not the only one - pornography is another.

My point is - just because certain people enjoy such activities does not mean they are a suitable subjects for discussion on a Christian forum. Particularly in light of the human toll involved - which I don't find to be a laughing matter.

Again I say correlation does not equal causation. Perhaps people that are angry and like to do drugs also like rock/metal music. Does that mean the music caused their behavior? I don't think so. If you could prove a causative effect between listening to heavy metal and drug use or Satan worship then you would have a major breakthrough in human psychology.

there was a time in my life that a thought came to my mind. that i should stop listening to the music i liked if i was to really get involved with my soul and our religion.
i felt so bad, so awful, i couldn't bear it.
not that i was a super fun of any music, but i enjoyed listening to RNB music, or anything with a high bit and in a high volume during driving.
i never liked heavy metal. it's too tough on me.

time passed by, and i ended up avoiding listening to secular music.
eg Michael Bolton or Whitney Houston are so outrageous emotional to my ears and soul that i can't stand them no more.
i rarely go to a bar now, but when i did once i found out something about myself. such music gets my egoism to the top. consequently, it is bad for my spiritual health because i have emotional drawbacks.

i can't say about christian music, but whatever is emotional for me i try to be aware of that and test it in my mind and heart to see if it's good for my soul or not.

i agree to a great extent with wayseer that heavy metal is exactly that, a start for bad things.

i also agree with Maria Regina about our nous.
we need very good self-consciousness to be able to understand what is good or bad for our soul.

Question: Are we the sole judge of what is good or bad for our soul?

of course we are not the sole judge.
our spiritual father is the number one judge for our soul's health.
but i believe that through time and because of our personal ascesis we become able to sense the impact that something has on our soul. with help from our spiritual father we will be able ensure that we judged good or not.

Wayseer,

I will simply say again, you should worry about your own salvation first, and pray fervently for others. That said, you are spending way too much time and energy on giving some of us a "schooling". You have no idea what life experiences some of the others of us on here have, and I really don't care to share that deeply with somebody who is going off in here judging others.

...forgive me.

From most of the heavy metal i have heard, it is focussed on darkness and pagan mythology. I dont want to sound moralistic but i dont find heavy metal to be any more enriching than gangster rap, and i am sure you can tell how i feel about that! On the other hand, opera/metal fusion is kindof cool!

As time goes on, I find myself less and less able to listen to most kinds of music for more than 10 or 15 minutes before I have to turn the radio off, or else put on talk. Even the bands that I love the most (I'm pretty die hard about Rush) I'm not able to keep on for all that long. It just starts to wear on me or something.

I must agree with Annoula an Knee-V. There was I time whe I couldn't imagine living without rock music. But the more I began to live my faith, the less I was able to listen to it. While I'll occasionally listen to the likes of Evanescence, I also can't listen to the heavier stuff (especially their more recent music) for very long. I find it suffocating. I also have a crazy neighbour upstairs who inflicts his music on me for hours every night so I've ended up just enjoying silence! I usually only listen to chant when I'm painting icons or perhaps classical music when I'm reading...anything heavier I listen to while I'm cleaning my house!

Same here. There's only a couple of CDs that I can actually listen from beginning to end without needing to turn it off.

And as much as I like classical music, it's one of the worst offenders as far as making me feel anxious and unable to concentrate. My whole body stiffens up and sometimes I catch myself holding my breath. I have no idea how anyone could call classical music "relaxing". ^_^

Anyways, I like listening to movie scores in the car. They were composed to be background music, and are easy to tune out.

I listen pretty regularly to the basic pop/rock of the 70's, 80's. 90's and today. I listen to that or a mixture of my CD's also while cleaning house. My husband practically only listens to mostly classical music now...especially in the car to and from work. This is a guy who has an interesting taste from rock to country to jazz. :D

My husband is still into rock n roll (40s to 60s), country, bluegrass, Dixie music, and jazz. Recently, he has been listening to KAPA in the afternoons because he likes the Aloha spirit. He also likes to listen to the Big Band era especiallyTommy and Jimmy Dorsey.

Nothing created is evil in and of itself. If it is used in a manner contrary to God's will, then the use of it is is evil. If it, however, is used in a manner to Glorify God, then it is rather Gnostic, and borders on blaspheming the Holy Spirit, to try and attribute some hidden evilness to it.
