So I was looking up some information about a Bible study I am working on, and I found a link to Bible studies done by the Calvary Chapel crew. I like a lot what they talked about and how they presented the material. My reason for this post, is I was wondering if there are any people that are with a Calvary Chapel Church, and would let me know what they are about.
I have read what their Theology is about, but are they charismatic? Do they speak in tongues? And any other information that people would like to tell me about this group of believers.
Thanks

There is a thread called “Calvary Chapel anyone?” on the Charismatic forum. You may want to check it out from time to time.

I have been attending the Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa for about eight years, and it is one of the best Bible teaching churches in the US. Not all are the same, some of the smaller ones leave much to be desired, but if you test theteaching and find it true then it is a good church. Nice thing is no rules, just grace. No membership drives, no tithing issues, just a place to worship the Lord.

**Note: the following post is my personal opinion based on observation and research. Do not take the following as fact by itself; do your own research and make your own decisions**

I personally do not suggest Calvary Chapel. I went to one because I was invited by a friend. After three preachings, I was done.

Reasons?

1. According to the minister, the anti-Christ will be a Communist, Jewish Russian (of course, since the former Soviet Union was mainly an Eastern Orthodox Christian nation...)
2. By the same minister, Harry Potter teaches witchcraft to convert children to Devil-worshiper (of course, since the author is a dedicated and confirmed member of the Church of Scottland)
3. Their "ministers" never go to seminary (because that would deceive them?)
4. Their "ministers" must conform to the ideals of the denomination's founder (control?)
5. The denomination's founder's had a rather, um, "colorful" past (and I do mean "colorful)
6. I've noticed the heresies of montanism and chiliasm, and they seem to emphasize Jesus' Divinity as more important than His humanity (which is another heresy)

Now perhaps this was just in the church I was at, but I've heard someother troubling things about the denomination. I suggest you research the denomination thoroughly, both pro and anti sides.

It isn't just that particular church that you visited. Here in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, there is another Calvary Baptist Church that some friends of mine go to. Ive visited a few times, and on Fridays there's always some good things going on. But one thing Ive noticed is that they are always talking about us (mankind) as if we were dirt. Unworthy and we must always thank God for his mercyfulness over us, menstrual rags. (Once they did use "menstrual rags" to describe us) And hey, I know were not the perfect ones here, but where's the "God's greatest creation"?

Also, don't ask questions, or you'll be reguarded as a subversive. In some ways, it's kinda cultish.

Kakadu, I attend Calvary Chapel and find them to be very Biblically based. I very much enjoy the sermons at Calvary Chapel and to this point, have not heard any unbiblical teaching. I am an exmormon so I am very careful now to take what I hear in church and then read it in the word of God for myself to make sure that the teaching lines up with the Bible. I was in a cult once, don't want to go back to another one. The pastor at our calvary Chapel is Brian Micheals and He is very much a Bible believing, trinity preaching pastor. The sermons he does go from one end of the Bible, verse by verse and very imformative and he reads the scripture to the congergation as we read along. They have Bibles at the church so that anyone who did not bring there Bible can grab one on the way in and read along with the sermon and yes, he does read each verse in His sermons. As far as the worship style of the church, it is modern worship. The praise music would be songs you would hear from jars of clay, Mercy Me, Rebecca ST. james, newsboys, ect. but they are all about God. You will see some people raise their hands during worship (singing), some will just stand, some will remain seated, some will hold there arms out and some will just rest their arms by their side or on the chair in front of them. Once in awhile you will hear someone say, "Thank you Lord" or "I love you Jesus" and you will hear a lot of amen and praise God, but it isn't yelling and screaming hesteria, just a shout out to the Lord of praise. I have never seen anyone roll in isles, jump up and down while "slain in the spirit", scream, or run around. As far as dress attire, you will see women in jeans, skirts, dresses and capri pants and dress slacks. You will see men in dress shirts, t-shirts, jackets, jeans, dress pants, baggy kaki's and I have even seen guys who have just come from the gym on Saterday nights in their sweat pants and muscle shirts. There is a little bit of everything at calvary chapel as far as dress attire goes and also as far as worship style. People that are there just go to worship God and learn His word and they really don't seem to care what anyone is wearing or how they worship. CC does believe in gifts of the spirit but you will not see it practiced at a CC like it is practiced in a "Full Gospel Church". After service is totally over, people can go to the front of the sanctuary and others will pray with them, talk with them, ect. One thing you will probably not see at a CC is the pastor smacking someone on the head and saying, "Devil be gone, you are healed". That just isn't how it works at CC. Here is a link where you can listen to sermons and worship service at a CC.

http://www.calvaryradio.com/

One thing I do encourage you to do, and I would encourage this no matter what church we were talking about but is to either email or call the pastor of the CC you would be attending and ask him personally what His beliefs are on the Bible and the nature of God. Ask Him if He believes in and worships the trinity of God and His views on heaven and Hell. Ask Him what his beliefs are on communion and baptism. The reason I say to ask these things is because as we all know, churches can vary from congergation to congergation and it is so important to know what your pastor believes so you will not be led astray by false teachings. At our CC, we have communion Mon.-Fri. morning and every 1st week of the month. Our church is very big so it can make communion a very long process but our pastor feels it is vital to be able to partake of the Lord's supper, so they offer it weekday mornings for everyone who wants to come partake. Our church also encourages water baptism when someone comes to Christ and hold large baptisms every month.

Like I said, give the pastor of the local cc a call, pray for God to speak to your heart while you talk to this pastor and compare what He tells you with what the Word of God says. If the 2 match up, it is a good thing, if the don't....that is your answer right there.

God Bless YOu,
GRace

HI, I have to tell you that the things you described above are NOTHING at all what my experiences have been with the Calvary Chapel. This is why it is so important to talk to the pastor of a church first and find out exactly what His personal beliefs are about the nature of God, the Bible, baptism, communion, ect. As far as the founders "colorful past"...can you tell me what you mean by that? The only "color" I know of in His past is that He used to be totally charismatic but felt that there was to much focus on demon casting and "excitement" during service and He felt that there should be more "meat" (word of God) in the services.

As far as Jesus's divinity, it is more important than His humanity because He was fully God and fully man. However, if you are referring to His teachings while on earth and His sacrafice on the cross for our sins....my pastor talks about this in EVERY sermon, even our OT sermons. He always ties in the OT prophecies to the NT and points them out and talks of the Lord's work while on the earth. Also one thing I should point out is that the pastor at our church is always speaking against false teachings and false prophets is constantly encourages us to become emmersed in the Word of God so we will recognize false preachers, teacher and prophets when we see or hear them. Just last week he took a few minutes to point out how false some of the gimics preachers use to make money for themselves and further there own cause rather than God's. He has also repeatedly said that if what you are taught in church goes against the Word of God, it is time to have a talk with the pastor, call him to repentance and correction and if the false teachings does not stop, it is time to find a new church and that the same rule applies to him.

Maybe I just got really lucky and ended up with a great pastor that truly lives to serve God. This is the only CC I have been to, so I don't know what all of them are like but I really have found this one to be very solid, biblically.

God Bless,
Grace

A few Calvary Chapel pastors attended "bible school," but very very few have attended any kind of seminary. My sister goes to the Calvary Chapel Bible School and is graduating this year. I have to say, from what I've seen of it, it is no replacement for seminary. It's more like brainwash camp for highschool graduates.

Something very sad I noticed is that Calvary Chapel is indeed Nestorian. Since they do not talk very often about the nature of Christ, and when they do it's usually just an odd comment in reference to something else, I didn't notice it until recently.

At first I thought it was just a little over zealousness in trying to prove Catholics wrong. But it goes beyond the whole, "Mary is not the Mother of God" thing. Now that such comments had caught my attention, I see that they clearly divide Christ's two natures. For example, like Greg Laurie's comment the other week on the Passion, when Christ was suffering, "and this was His human self doing this, not Him as God..." My mouth just dropped open when I heard him say that.

You have got to be kidding me! Are you saying Greg Laurie denies the hypostasis?

He clearly divides Christ's nature into two persons, one human one divine. I've heard him do it on numerous occasions, as I've been at his church for almost 7 years.
