  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I went for a 2 hour bike ride today. Just a perfect autumn (fall) day here in Australia. Along the coastline, the scenery with pristine beaches and a cloudless sky. I managed to switch off for that time, stop fretting about the future. How fortunate I am to live in a safe country too.

hi afishamongmany
good analogy about the pub
I was going to call this thread "Respite from talking about God" but that might make me a heretic.
Mornin Paul, happy Tuesday/ Wednesday to you. Ah no, heretics talk about God a lot :).
The fish sips his beer appreciatively, ignores The Elephant in the room and ruminates, "Its wholesomeness I crave. Flowers and fish and chips? Chumradery and being useful. Ah got to go. Catch you later!"

Hi Paul - you called? Despite my pseudo I am human - in a finny kind of way.
Can empathise with what you say about just talking, though don't feel alienation. Forum land is what it is, communication "but not as we know it".
Have been surprised at how little hanging out goes on in the Chat place. I suppose what we're looking for is some equivalent to what we Brits call 'the local', that is a pub where you'd 'pop in' fairly regularly knowing that there would be someone (or two or three) there you could chinwag with while enjoying a favorite beverage.
Is this possible to parallel in cyberspace? Duno?
Anyway mate I'm off to dreamland.
Keep rowing the boat. Every day a gift.

I'm wondering if there are any places on this forum where human beings can have a chat about life in general without getting into serious theological debates.

Hobbies would seem fairly safe.
I've recently swapped a few nice postings about board games... No warfare broke out.

"life in general" may be too broad and too bland unless you happen to be being shot at, are out of water in a desert etc. But these are specifics, rather than generalities.
"It is are not raining in Tokyo..."
(one only for older folk, that.)

A classic respite for UK clergy used to be model railways.
Giant Victorian vicarages, and less than Victorian numbers of children and servants: rooms aplenty.

I'd rather communicate with an open-minded non-believer than a closed-minded believer.
I'm wondering if there are any places on this forum where human beings can have a chat about life in general without getting into serious theological debates. It should be known I'm catholic just in case you have a problem with catholicism. I just want to be upfront about that but would prefer not to talk about it really, unless really necessary.
Just a shame that we can come to a forum and feel alienated because all our conversations have to be religious. No-one seems to want to relax and be themselves. Well that has been my experience on OBOB. It lacks the personal touch in my view.
Aren't we called to love another? Rather than score points over one another?
There are definitely some serious topics discussed here - as serious as it gets. But I believe you can start a topic about any [fun] thing you want. There is even a joke thread. And knowing that you probably know that too...makes me think that your gripe is really of a different nature...like you would rather not look at the serious side of life for fear it may mean you have to face some things you would rather not. So...let's have it - what's really bugging you?

I mean I'm seen only in light of the debate. No one seems interested in the whole person. Which sounds like a real moan I know so you can ignore that. Anyway no I'm not a pastor, priest or otherwise. No that is not me in the avatar, but I am 58 years old and unemployed. I used to be a primary school teacher, then teacher of English overseas, then janitor/cleaner. Now I cant even get that kind of job. I swim in my free time and walk and recently really trying to focus on life's meaning through getting back into my original faith,Catholicism.
Paul, if you can let this evil Calvinist interject some things that are important here.

First, welcome, and i hope you stay around. However, it seems to me that right now you and your family do not need a Christian Chat board. What you need is a community of people to laugh, cry and celebrate with. Real, breathing warm bodies. Not electrons on a computer monitor. Your Catholic Church congregation is probably a good start.

It seems as if you have a great deal of life experience, and probably the scars to prove it. That is something i believe should be shared with your church community. Maybe in the Catholic School system (which in my area --Western PA, majority Catholic-- is actually pretty good). True it does not pay as well, but it is better than nothing, and i suspect a lower stress level.

i see that you are married, so the Priesthood is unlikely. However, formerly married Priests are actually quite affective in their parishes. They can empathise with their congregation in a way that the average celebate priest cannot.

Still, there are ways to serve in your church that do not entail holy orders. It is a good start.

My real concern: You can't win the fight against all that troubles you alone. So don't be alone. Don't cut yourself off.

You want somebody to talk to, my contact info is on my user page. i can give you my gmail address if you wish.

Hey, fellow human being here. Also a Christian. Sorry if you've seen my angry posts.

Anyway, I agree with what the others said. You should kind of expect debate to be the most popular thing around here. If I knew half of the liberals I dislike on here I'd feel so ashamed for having hated them for their views. But part of that reason is because I fear alienation. If all the Christians end up having the same beliefs as most atheists, then who am I left with? i fear being blacklisted and despised in a society that could reject me. It's all paranoia, but I have those same worries about the future--namely, that this big paradise will be built on Earth and that I won't be let in. People will forget God because they will have proven that they could make a society without Him, and they can say that everything got better once Christianity was abandoned because they saw nothing good from it.
