I have dial-up right now and have the option of cable or dsl now in my area. Would like to hear some of your veiws on which is better. Thanks!

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It depends, really...
The main thing about cable, is that you share the same line with all the users in your local area, so if everyone's on at the same time, your internet can slow down.
DSL is more expensive, but you have guaranteed bandwidth, and it will generally be faster. You're also going to have to think about how far, geographically, you are from the phone company's office. The further away you are, the slower the DSL connection will be.
I have 2Mbps cable, which is very fast for all I do on the internet. If you're looking for generally high speeds, with low cost, choose cable. If you want a really fast (more than a couple of Mbps), but with a higher cost, choose DSL.
Personally, I would choose cable. It was meant for residential customers. DSL is more expensive, and has more limiting factors.

I'd definitely go with cable, yes it is shared with your neighbours but the speeds still leave DSL for dust , well at least here is Aust. It's usually a little cheaper as well.

Most cable companies have their speeds set at 1.5MBIT / second downstream and 256k upstream.
Most DSL have theirs at 256/256 or 768/256

This is so funny, I was just going through my e-mail and my ISP sent this e-mail to me.....
I'm getting a much faster speed here though in both directions......I guess it pays to be close to the cable company and have a booster 2 houses up the street

But because Cable uses "shared bandwith" instead of "dedicated local bandwith", this peak performance is not usually achieved.
Also, just as keithylishus said it depends on how far you are from the local Telco building.
Weather conditions can play a role. I hail in Austin and it RAINS alot! Cable goes out. None of my dsl friends complain, though...

Cable is very fast...usually alot of promtions to signup get reduced payment for up to6 months!

Depends on the offer. As for cable that depends on how many people are using it in your area. I've heard some really bad stories from cable users concerning dramatic slow down. I prefer SDSL, myself. You may want to check if it's ADSL or SDSL service. SDSL will cost more than ADSL but you get full upload speeds.

Here in the UK dsl has better choice most standard cable companies offer 1MB lines, and standard dsl is 512 with a range upto 8MB. Only problem in the uk all services only have a 256
