  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

But can you be a scientist and not be a mathematician?

It depends on your definitions of "scientist" and "mathematician".

Now there's a mathematician's answer for you...

(Incidentally, what's the source for the assertion about the proportion of theist mathematicians?)

I hear two sounds:
  1. the evolution House of Cards tumbling, and
  2. the evolutionists trying desperately to "spin" the new finding

The only thing tumbling down is Humpty Dumpty and all Creations soldiers!

Whether you like it or not you are descended from apes. If you refuse this then Never again seek medical care, for you refute the science of medicine and in fact all science.
But as we say in my country "On the Deaf man's door you can knock all you want"

Geologist

I am a geologist first and foremost, and yes I use considerable math, this is probably due to me taking my geology to the next step, that is, hard rock geology and analytical chemistry.

I would be the first to admit that under grad geology can be a bit weak nowadays, but not many people with under grad geology degrees become geologist, you need to take it further and to a higher level, i.e. Masters Degree and/or PhD.

My PhD was geology based, with the field area being in the west of Scotland. I spend 3 days in the field and 2.5 years running analysis with lasers and mass spectrometers. In fact the biggest part of my PhD was math based, and consisted of developing mathematical formulas for the de-convolution of multiple signals, I was not a pretty sight at 3.30 in the mornings.

Geology is a multi discipline subject, and if taken far enough you have to develop multiple skills, including math, physics, chemistry and biology.

I think it was the multi discipline aspects of geology that excited me, partially has I had already completed a degree in physics and planetary science, which was the result of reading literature by Carl Sagan, who I will always be grateful too for putting pen to paper.
