  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

-13 degrees F. ?
Warm indeed, remote start system to get it warmed up. It has full time FWD, but also a "Snow" mode which locks the differentials and is heavy enough to go through a foot of snow. While the Jeep is warm, the weather is not; already went down to -17 C. two nights ago. In Feb. It is not uncommon to see lows of -25 C.

-13 degrees F. ?
-17 C = +1.5 F, -25 C = is indeed -13 F. The coldest I experienced was about 20 years ago. I was in New Liskeard Ontario visiting customers in January; -48 C for about a 14 hour period, day time highs were -38 C. -48 C = -54 F (-40 C = -40 F).

This morning it is -15 C. This is a picture of or house taken yesterday afternoon:

Thank you. You’re so friendly. Beautiful house. You probably like being there. Very cozy looking. We had snow about five years ago. Sometimes it stays. Pretty proud of this. Brings out the mountain man.

Great photo!

Days are somewhat short here in the winter. With the snow on the ground, our nights seem not quite as dark.

Yes, very small, but cozy. My wife always says that the "smoke" coming out of the chimney makes it look warm (natural gas furnace and water heater). Next picture is from Highway 7 near forest taken on the 12th, that is about an hour south west of us:

here is our back yard and the neighbors. A rare photo I got from my wife. It was too cold to go out and spend much time, about 0 degrees Celsius. Looks kind of neat and we were all rejoicing. It was when our daughter was still alive. Surprisingly the yard is still short cut. And I think we had a fire that day, in the fireplace.
Unfortunately, I could not load your photo:

1765753689351.png

A lot of people have fire pits out doors to extend our backyard season. We have a propane fire table and roll-up awning and it is nice to sit out on a cool evening. 0 C is about our limit for sitting outside. Speaking of which, if it is clear this week, there are a couple days meteor showers are supposed to be visible. I'm uncertain it will stop snowing long enough. LOL.

BTW, I bought a bit of a rough project gun at an auction, really rough British Fouling Piece, single barrel, 20 ga. I'm going to clean it up with the intent to get it shooting, but if it is not good enough, it will make a wall hanger:

O-o-h thanks for the pictures. It’s a mzldr, with the. Long barrel. I’m in the market for one. Does this one have any difficult gunsmithing for you to do. My skills are limited. But with the price of mzldr these days a fixer upper might be a good idea. Where did you find it?

sorry about the picture but I think it’s a google or apple picture. Neat back yard shot. We can’t have open fires here- chaparral- fire prone. Every 50 years it turns into spontaneous combustion. But we have had them started by the electric company too. Thanks I guess I’ll switch gears and do a search on gunbroker. This year promises mild, probably no snow and not enough rain. 50s this week. But you’re tough. Did you hunt this year?

No worries about the photo. I bought the shotgun at a local auction, $50 Canadian ($35 us), it is very rough, bottom rib needs reattached, rear tang on the trigger guard is broken off (tig welding), needs a serious cleanup, stock repairs., nipple has been dry fired to pieces. Only time will tell if it will shoot again. I hope so as it has a great feel and points naturally.

been thinking about selling CVA. Fearing firing pin will get sticky or ejector will break. Pulled firing pin tonight and it looks good. My cleaning must be working. I run a little rem oil or ballistol through it. A lot really and it was clean. So no worries keep it.

Further to the old Shotgun...

It will shoot again! While the outside is rough and pitted, the inside of the bore is dark, but smooth. Lots of metal left in the barrel, even at the muzzle end. Also, once I got it apart, I found proof marks and a makers stamp. It is a bit older than I thought. The proof stamps are from the Birmingham Proof House in Birmingham England; those two particular stamps indicate it was proofed between 1813 and 1855, I estimated a bit later. The makers mark, H&S would be either Hollis and Sheath, or the earlier company Hollis and Sons. A single H would be for the earliest manifestation of the company, Hollis Brothers. The one brother died before the Birmingham proof house came into existence. H & S were known more for their later double guns, making locks and parts for Enfield, and "Trade Guns" for the fur trade. This fowler has some engraving and had checkering, so not a trade gun. It might be a bit of a challenge getting the damaged nipple out, but it will soak for the time being. Yet another update, the lower proof mark has a "V" which represents Queen Victoria on the throne; that puts this guns proof date after 1837.

Wow Mark some ancient history. Is it worth anymore as an antique with those proof marks? It couldn’t have been much mass produced like today. So made in London…

In nicer shape it might be, but this one is rough and tough.

Pulled 22 rds and trimmed the brass by hand. Loaded 17 more rds into trimmed brass. What a mind bender it was to figure that out. Along with the firing pin. Hung in there and finished the project. Excellent CVA 45-70 for sale on another sight. With ammo and mold and scope.

Dont have to sell. May not want to. The ad is up. It cost 20 bucks.

I have been making 9.3 x 62 brass from 30-06, after initial expansion, then need a lot of trimming for length, and a slight bit more after fire forming. Fiddly but fun. :)

Well then…. I sit around a lot of the day and go out to the shed in the afternoon when I want to do some reloading. Is that what you do…? I have to put on my long Johns and a shirt or two and a coat if I’m going to be awhile. It’s a little 8x12 shed. My heater broke the first year. Too cold in winter too hot in summer. It’s a fall and spring hobby. Where do you do your casting?

I need an off season hobby to work in my garage in winter. Where do you work. You’re tackling something big this season. I’m only doing what I’ve always done also but I’m only set up for reloading and shooting. Have already expanded it some…. Gunsmithing? It’s a brilliant idea. I don’t know.

I have not casted bullets in years, I buy all my bullets, but reload and work on guns in the basement. I am still working 4 days a week, it is more of when I can, or when needed that I reload.
