  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is another film where some Christians go, "No, I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole because watching it will offend God."
No, I think that the film actually portrays our faith in a humourous and very recognisable way, without crossing the line into offence.

I thought it was great, and no, I did not think it mocked God at all. Remember, He has a sense of humor. Why else would He have given men nipples?

And, frankly, I thought the message at the end, where Bruce realizes he needs God, well, that is great.

And the DVD is swell, but I could see why they cut some scenes.

My wife, BTW, did not see it in the theatre, she was of the mind set that it would mock God. So when I came home, and said it was great, she still was not convinced. So I got the DVD when it came out, and she sat down and watched it, and really enjoyed it. She now agrees, no mocking God was done in this film.

Those of you who say you haven't seen it because you think it mocks God really need to give it a shot. This movie does the exact opposite. It shows us from God's perspective. It shows how He longs for us to come to Him and to accept His love, and shows the things that we try to use as temporary substitutes. Bruce asks God "how can you make someone love you without violating their free will?" To which God replies "Once you figure that one out, let me know." This was a great movie that really shows the depth of God's love for us. It might surprise you.

I thought the "Boss-Electrician-Janitor" thing was quite clever, in the way that it represented the Trinity.
Especially when the Janitor says, "No matter how dirty something gets, it can always be washed clean." Holy Spirit, anyone? :)

It was a harmless movie. It showed all of Gods worldly powers, and showed that there are alot of people who believe in him and come to him for guidance. We all have been conceited to a degree at some point in our time..so why not complain about his apartment? Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman are completely awesome in this movie! I had a friend who thought this movie was going to be making fun of God, but after I finally convinced her to see it, she loved it! It's just a movie, why disect it so much?

Exactly. I think the greatest part of the film (and one which surprised me) is when Jim Carrey's character cries out to god and says something like, Ok, ok, I get it, God. I can't do it without you. Without you I'm nothing. I need you . . . He spouts off for a while about how much he finally realizes he actually needs god and can't do it himself. THAT was pretty cool.

Well said. It really is a good, fun-loving entertaining film. Of course, I watched it with TV Guardian which helps. ;)

Bruce Almighty, harmless, fun film or a step too far...your views?:)
I think everyone ,at one time or another feels like He isn't listening. I laughed out loud more in this movie than any in a LONG time. Remember the beginning...??? "I wouldn't want to get a hair in the booger!"

I liked it pretty good..Morgan Freeman, he is like so perfect for his role. He's always reminded me of like a grandfather figure, how sometimes I think of God.

But, nah..There wasn't any mockery of God in it. When I first saw a commercial for it, I thought it meant Bruce WAS God..And there was the part where they show him blowing up the woman's skirt I was like, "God wouldn't do that!" LOL. Then I saw it and I realized, it wasn't bad at all, really.

It's been on HBO like NON-STOP lately. It's almost annoying.

wasn't sure i'd like this movie but caught it as an inflight flick (mayhaps being 'up in the heavens' helped me appreciate it? :D ) and thought it was a hoot. caught the DvD later when i showed it to the 'rents and loved the deleted scenes. i'm sure the theology could be shown to be more holey than holy but it wasn't as bad as what i've read about "The Passion of the Ark", a story about God picking someone to prepare for another world flood. wasn't there something about a promise to never flood the earth again? weren't rainbows involved or something? ah well.

Jim Carrey is hilarious!:D
This is Carrey's best film - awesome acting.
I thought it handled the subject delicately, except for the part when Carrey is yelling at God - just a little too far.
Other than that, the film was actually inspiring, unlike most films today.

Well, I hesitate to judge it, because I haven't seen it; but the trailer did offend me. I know it is only meant to be a joke, but the idea that any mortal could handle the awesome power and responsibilities of God is insulting to me. Then again... maybe I just take things too seriously. :|

I was very tentative at first but I really enjoyed it. "God is not mocked." and I really got the feeling that the movie was more about mocking man than God anyway. The theology was screwy (DUH, it's a secular movie) but when Morgan Freeman said to Bruce, "Now, that's a prayer." it really hit home with a straight up spiritual point about being selfless.

But he couldn't and it was made hilariously apparent by his ineptness with them and the overwhelming responsibility of trying.
