  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know I was telling my H that the no sleeping right now is preparing me for the 24/7 very little sleep. And I keep saying I need the sleep now but it's just not happening.

Nikki, I forgot to tell ya but we were thinking of naming Graces' middle name Katelyn. Not sure yet but I love the name!

I have a Avent handpump that someone gave me. I only used it when I engorged. I am SO glad I didn't shell out the bucks for one of those electric ones.

Ironically, my SIL bought a Medela Pump in Style ($260+!!!) and then quit BFing before 5 months.[/quote

I've decided to wait to buy one. I'll get the cheapy at first to try & hopefully it'll workl!

I loved my Medela hand pump. It was great and I got so much use out of it. It was great when waking up in the middle of night because I could just keep it beside my bed. I would get *something* if you're planning on BFing for any amount of time. I used mine the most in the first few weeks when my milk first came in and I was constantly engorged. Hand expressing is great, but it takes for EVER and I felt that I was never empty enough.

I did not read all the posts so may be repeating someone elses advise. I bought a Medela pump with my first, it was so-so, and being a new mom with a first born I had a hard time getting the hang of it at first. It was a gift so I used it.

With #2 I rented a really super delux model from the hospital for like $12 a month!!! I had to buy the bottles and tubes but they were not expensive and it worked soooo much better.

My suggestion, if your hospital has rentals get it!

Was the pump a manual or an electric?

Was the pump a manual or an electric?

It was electric, I had to buy my own tubing, bottles and stuff so hygeine was not an issue but main that thing could pump a bottle full in a fraction of the time I could hand express. I was working full time and usually always on the go at home so time was a big factor.
I also found that for me the pump got more milk out than I could express manually so I had a supply of bottles in the freezer for baby and did not have to resort to formula as a back up.
The cost was minimal ($12 a month) in renting and I could rent it for up to 3 years if I desired without a problem.

The biggest thing I discovered in expressing was to relax. Warm compresses on the breast and even smelling babies blanket all helped get the flow started. I would put on some music, get a cold glass of water and try to relax my mind and body before starting. If I were tense or rushed I would get a lot less milk out and then feel full to soon.
