  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you are full, expressing is easy. And there's the great "juice jar method" that helps even when engorged. (ask if you need details)

Unless you are going to be away from baby for long times and will need to express daily, you do not need an electric pump.

Congratulations!

If you are only expressing when you are engorged and when baby isn't really hungry I would suggest getting a small manual or battery powered one for 20 or 30 dollars. If you are going to be needing to pump daily while you are working, or if you must be away from baby for long periods an electric pump probably going to be best for you. Again it just depends on your situation...I only used a manual one for my boys and it worked fine for me.

Can you hire a pump from the hospital? Over here in Australia that is an option. If you can, it means you can have one there when you first have the baby and you can see if you are going to use it before you spend the money on one.
I bought a Medela Mini Electric... it was fantastic. I used is almost daily in the first 6 weeks. (to get a stockpile of breast milk for when I wasn't able to be with Maddie and then to try and boost my supply as it was very lacking!)
I stopped using it at about 8 weeks. Even though I only used it for such a short period of time it was well worth it. Plus I will have it for every child after this one.
I also found it hard to hand express, even in the shower!!!

I breastfed two children and have never needed one. I did borrow one from a friend for a short while but found it was useless in getting milk out so I just gave my ds formula if I was going to be out. (which was only a handful of times anyway) dd never ever took a bottle, so if I was going to be out, I had to time it so I could be back within 3 hours for her next feed. I didn't really go out without her until she was on solids anyway, so she was able to go that little bit longer between feeds.

You have to realise that there are some babies who no matter how hard you try REFUSE to take a bottle. My dd was like this.

I have a lazy eater. If he is hungry but tired, his tiredness wins out every time, then he wakes angry and takes it out on "the sisters".

Off and On I have oversupply, so the hand pump I was loaned by a good friend has come in handy. Once in a while I also have to go to public offices or drive with the inlaws to the relatives (which are long trips), and it comes in handy to have a bottle set aside.

I find if he eats "some", and I pump what is left, it comes in handy when I cannot hold him to nurse, like at that feeding in the middle of the night, 2 hours after you fell asleep... perfect daddy-time feeding. ;) If I don't do that, I get extremely uncomfortable by the next feed, and he can't latch due to how full they are. (this only works when he is going for a 3-4 hr stretch though)

Hand expressing is next to impossible with me, so the pump has helped. The only downfall is that it is made really crappily (two peices that allow for suction are CONSTANTLY, and I mean constantly losing suction or falling out) and I'd do much better with the electric pump that the local apothecary hires out. I think we'll be returning the scale and rent that next.

See that's my thing is what if I'm producing more milk than what she eats. Gotta get that milk out somehow. There is a girl that is selling her Medella for $100 and I'm leary of a used one. I always thought that it was kinda gross but now I'm considering buying the thing.

Your milk supply will level itself out. From what I understand if you continue to pump your breasts will continue to produce more milk than she needs and you'll be stuck in this vicious cycle.

Well engorgement I *think* will happen regardless when your milk comes in. From what I've read the best way to help engorgement is to nurse often, not going more than 3 hours without nursing and definitely not to skip on night feedings. Where is jgonz when we need her lol

She is right. You don't make more milk than the baby needs. You make exactly the amount baby needs..... and then when you experience the growth spurt where baby nurses and nurses and nurses which is baby telling your body "more, please, I'm bigger now." You make exactly the right amount of exactly the right kind of milk for your baby. :)

Engorgement happens when your milk first comes in and it will happen no matter what you do, it is inevitable .... initially, you get a ton of milk, but then your body figures out what it needs and only makes that amount.

Oh, well... you can pump.... the dealio though is that it makes engorgement last longer, essentially. Our bodies are brilliant, really! If we use the breastmilk, the body makes the same amount. If we don't use it, we stop making it. So when you pump, you stimulate the production of more milk because you "used" that milk.

So yes, you can pump to relieve the pressure... just a tiny bit, so you don't produce more milk. Do you need to do it? No. Will it really help.... not really in my experience..... ibuprofen helps though!! lol

You can pump to relieve engorgement, but only pump a couple of minutes if you do. It's probably easier to bend over the sink and hand express the worst of it away (unless you want to keep some for a freezer stash). Your body will adjust to the actual demands of the baby (as everyone else said).

Cabbage leaves or a bag of frozen peas on your breasts (after a feeding) will help relieve engorgment as well. Most of the time (in the first few weeks anyway) engorgement happens from the actual breast tissue swelling...
