  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

October 10th, 1985 for me. I don't remember too much about the 80s, although we were raised behind the curve of the current pop culture so we essentially got all the 80s stuff in the early 90s.

Flintstone Kids, Rubik's Cube, Vinyl records, Betamax, etc. I didn't really get into 80s music until I was about 11 or 12, though, since growing up my parents generally listened to the 70s, Classic Rock, and Oldies stations. I remember a lot of the 90s music that was popular as I was growing up but didn't really start listening to a lot of it (mainly Grunge and Post-Grunge) until I was in high school. Stuff that was on the radio from about '96 on I listened to when it was current (boy do I miss some of that stuff).

Unfortunately, I do remember when Achy Breaky Heart was new and everywhere. Even scarier is the realization that that's the year his daughter was born - things come full circle, I guess, although I'd argue that seeing Hannah Montana crap everywhere is far worse than what that song ever achieved.

On a different note, most good Goth Rock and Industrial was recorded before 2000, although there's a number of notable entries in the time since.

You’re a 90’s kid if:

You remember watching
-Kenan and Kel
-Doug
-Ren & Stimpy
-Pinky and the Brain
-AAAAAAAH Real Monsters!
-Rockos modern Life
-Animaniacs
-Gargoyles
-Tom and Jerry [when they didnt talk]
-Hey Arnold
-Out of the Box
-Bear in the Big Blue House
Actually, save for Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Doug (although after it was picked up by Disney/ABC), and Tom and Jerry, I didn't watch any of those - my parents had an unreasonable hatred of Nickelodeon shows during that time.

You just cant resist finishing this . . . "In west Philadelphia born and raised..."
Ha ha. Got the whole song memorized, actually.

You remember:
-Step by Step
-Family Matters
-Dinosaurs
-Boy Meets World
Yep to all four.

You remember when it was actually worth getting up early on a Saturday to watch cartoons.
Umhmm. ReBoot for the win. And Beakman's World. I miss SWAT Kats the most, though.

And the Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime feature that'd air at 9 or 10 in the morning. Gall Force, Venus Wars, 8 Man After, etc. I was a fan of it since then, which I think is why I don't get a lot of the hype that newer fans have over programs that are all the rage now. I just take that as a sign of seniority.

You remember reading "Goosebumps"
I had like 20-30 of those books.

when kick ball was something u did everyday!!
I was hit in the face once with a kick ball.

-You used to listen to the radio all day long just to record your FAVORITE song of ALL time on a tape.
I really did do that.

-You remember when Super Nintendos and Sega Genisis became popular.
SE-GA! They just don't make commercials like they used to. We had the NES and SNES for ages - I finally got the Genesis when they were being fazed out (I chose it over an N64, partially because I wanted a stereo as well and if I got the N64 I wouldn't have gotten the stereo either). We never did get an N64, but for me it was no major loss - video games haven't really been the same since the switch to 3D.

I do remember the Sega 32X and the Sega Channel - one of my friends had the Sega Channel; can't remember if he had the 32X, though.

-You remember The Original Game Boy.
I actually have the gray brick with the yellow screen, and the carrying case that could hold a whopping four games. I also had the power adapter so you wouldn't have to continuously run through scores of AA batteries. Go Kirby's Dream Land.

-You always wanted to send in a tape to America’s Funniest Home Videos . . .
but never taped anything funny
The submissions that really stick out in my memory from that show are two parodies, actually - the Jurassic Pork video and Pigeon Tonight. Speaking of which, how many remember the actual Chicken Tonight ads?

Here you go.

You remember watching:
-The Magic School Bus
-Wishbone
-Reading Rainbow
-and Ghostwriter on PBS
Try Carmen Sandiago and Bill Nye the Science Guy. :p

You remember when Yo-Yos were cool
Heh, heh. I had one of the light-up models, but for the life of me I cannot remember the marketed name - Yo Yo [something].

You remember those Where’s Waldo books.
Yep.

You remember eating Warheads and Splashers G
Black Cherry Warheads. :yum:

You remember watching:
-the 1st Batman
-Aladdin
-Ninja Turtles
-ghost busters
The movies or the TV shows? It doesn't matter either way, though.

You remember Ring Pops!!!
And Skip-It, and Push Pops. The commercials for which only seemed to air on the low-cost independent local stations around here.

-If you remember when every thing was "da BOMB!"
I wish I couldn't.

You remember boom boxes .vs. cd players.
Exactly.

Making those little paper fortune cookie things, and then predicting your life with them.
I never did, but my friends would.

You played and/or collected "Pogs"
Yes, yes I did.

You had at least one Tamagotchi, GigaPet, or Nano and brought it everywhere u went
No, I thought they were stupid then, same as now.

-All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand
-You collected those Beanie Babies
-Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon cards
-Coins with the states on them
-Carebears
-Silver dollars, which were cool to have
-Everyone watched the WB.
No, No, Pokemon, We're still finishing the State Quarters collection, No, We were more interested in $2 bills, and Heavens no.

if even know what an original walkman is..
I have one.

You know the Macarena by heart.
The song or the dance?

You went to McDonald’s to play in the playplace
Not really.

Before the MySpace frenzy . . .
Before the Internet & text messaging .
Before Sidekicks & iPods . .
Before PlayStation3 or X-BOX 360 .
Before Spongebob . .
Those were the days...

When everyone you knew had a furby
When light up sneakers & jelliez were cool
When you rented VHS tapes, not DVDs
When gas was $0.95 a gallon.
When we recorded stuff on VCR
You had slap bracelets!
You Actually played outside until it was dark!
Way back-Before we realized all this would eventually disappear.
Pretty much.

One thing our Social Studies teacher told us when we were in 8th grade was that my class (the class of '04; this was back in 2000, though) was probably the last class that would have memories of the First Gulf War. And I do in fact remember news of it going on, along with Desert Storm and video of mortar shelling in Israel during that time (although I can't remember where it was in Israel that was getting shelled in 1990/1991). I remember the presidential election as well.

November of 1985 for me.:)

I think the 90's are really underrated. Some of the best movies, music, tv shows, books, and video games came out back then.

They are. And the 00s are overrated.

I was born in 1981. Somebody got a walker?

rofl That's what I think at times.

1989...hmm I remember the NES, but I don't remember which game I was playing. I do know we never had Super Mario Bros (I know, of all the games not to have), but we had plenty of other games. We even had the "gold" Zelda (until some dude stole the NES!!).

Dude...I used to record songs on tape. lol And I thought I was the only one to do that... Best time to record was New Years Eve when the radio stations would do the top 100 of the year. mmmhmm...

Dude...I used to record songs on tape.

Lol I can remember taping music from the radion onto a tape! :D

I find it a weird thought now that during the 90s and before, the internet and mobile phones were not commonly used. Apart from business people and in offices, people just didn't have them much in their own homes.

Crazy because it feels like they have been around for ages! I think I was 15, when I got my first (brick sized) mobile phone and internet access. I don't know how people organise social events now without the convenience of mobile phones and texting, lol. It's too easy to lose people when you're out and about, making a quick phone call is just so handy, lol.

I don't remember much of the 80s to be honest, and I was born in November 1984...I was mostly a 90s kid.
