  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Book bans with a twist

Amanda Gorman's inauguration poem moved by school after parent's complaint

The Hill We Climb gets moved feom elementary to Middle School.

heres my new take.

If a parent wants a book banned or removed, or moved they are required to write a full opinion paper with proper citations. Let's say 1500 word minimum.

I'm getting tired of the tyranny of the scared and foolish.

Some people need to find a way to inject their racism in the meaning of a poem to their child. And if they can't they'll ban it.

And would-be book banners for public libraries should be required to have owned a library card for at least five years--with evidence of borrowing and reading at least one book a month.
I am not at all convinced that many of them have actually read--or even skimmed--the Classics and critically acclaimed books they want to ban.

Florida high schools are now removing Shakespeare, including the full text of “Romeo and Juliet,” to comply with Republicans’ new law restricting “sexual content.” “I think the rest of the nation — no, the world, is laughing at us,” a teacher said.

Can't be too careful.

“Ay, the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads; take it in what sense tou whilt.”

I remember in English class, one guy who was dating a rather busty classmate, kept saying brassiere rather than brazier. Our teacher, a stereotypical grey haired lady with cats, quipped, "Roth, get your head out of Jennifer's brassiere!!" We were dying and of course, those two were mortified. Ms. Hickman might have looked clueless, but she knew more than we suspected :p

Makes me wonder if anyone actually read the link.

Quote: In a statement, the Miami-Dade school district said it "was determined at the school that 'The Hill We Climb' is better suited for middle school students and, it was shelved in the middle school section of the media center," adding that the book remains available there.

Makes me wonder if you read the OP post.
I did, and that is why I pointed out the quote from the link.

Since what I do is so very important to you, I read the OP and a number of posts following, then read the article linked in the OP that shows the poem is still there and accessible to Middle School and above.

Then I listened to the author say the poem in the link provided in the OP and wondered what six year old would even listen to it? What 10 year old would read it unless assigned by a teacher?

I then cut and pasted the direct quote showing it was indeed NOT banned and posted it showing so.

Thank you for your personal attention and care of what I post and your perceived motivations. But I hardly garner such attention

If the child knows enough to request it by name and prove to the librarian that she can read at least at a fifth-grade level - that's an effective ban for elementary kids.
In a tweet responding to the school district's statement, Gorman argued a school book ban is "any action taken against a book that leaves access to a book restricted or diminished".

And if the child is six foot three they can play basketball - good luck finding a child fitting either description at fifth grade level. And why are you gender assigning? That she can read at a fifth grade level? Why don't you think boys would be able to read at a fifth grade level?

Yes, exactly - the book is effectively banned.

And why are you gender assigning? That she can read at a fifth grade level?
It's poetry. He can read it but feels it would be too unmanly.

Why don't you think boys would be able to read at a fifth grade level?
Parody is not your long suit.
