I was blocked on FB by a guy in my bible study because he is anti-Trump and super liberal. What do you think of a bible study that asks a Trump-supporting member to leave?

I don't think this is fair. Political stances are personal. It is not like you tried to lead people astray by making a heretical or unsound theological argument.

But do you want to be in such person's FB group anyway? You deserve a better group for yourself. :purpleheart:

I wish I could say I’m surprised but I’m not. Politics have ushered in a brand of ugliness I’ve never seen Christians display to one another. Maybe I’m out of the loop and missed other iterations.

Nevertheless, the study of God’s word shouldn’t be beset with division, secular alliances, or hate of any sort. I think its better to align yourself with others who are desirous of fruit rather than political comrades.

I don’t know if this was a group you were meeting in person. Kay Arthur has several online and offline studies you may be interested in. I’ve done several in the past. The fellowship was wonderful and I learned a lot. You can also watch her classes on Lightsource.

This division in our society is so destructive and the church isn't exempt. It seems our love and unity should transcend our differences. But it isn't, and usually hasn't. It's heartbreaking.

I had to shut something like this down once. A girl in my Baptist singles group enthusiastically supported Barack back in 2008. Somebody gave her grief about that so I straightened that person out.

Funny how rarely Republicans receive similar consideration though.

But for the record, no, it’s not cool to shut somebody out of a Christian group or Bible study over political differences.

Unfortunately the church is not immune from the issues of the day. The American Civil War comes to mind. We should do our best to maintain the unity of the brotherhood, but when it becomes impossible, as it sometimes does, we need to let our peace return to us and move on.

Are you blocked by a guy on FB from your Bible group or have you been asked to leave the your Bible group?

If he blocked you, that’s his prerogative. He doesn’t have to look at or read anything he doesn’t want to on his feed. It is his feed and as such, he controls it. He is not obligated to give you his audience. There are plenty of people who I am friends with IRL who I’ve removed or blocked from my social media timeline. It has to do with me and my needs, what I want to see on my TL, not what I think of them personally. Just like I’d excuse myself from a political rant of theirs in an IRL discussion, I excuse myself from it online.

If you were asked to leave the group, I’d need more info. If it’s a Bible study but you’re prone to going off-topic into politics... I mean, again, that makes sense. If I have a group and somebody always manages to take the conversation away from what the group is there for, again, that makes sense to me. If it’s just that you like Trump and the other guy doesn’t, then I think being cast out is a favor... And I am am saying as much as somebody who’s incredibly unsupportive of him and his presidency. You have a right to your opinion and politics as much as anybody else does. Forced agreement isn’t democracy or the voice of a free people in a free nation. It is your duty to espouse your political values, even if they conflict with mine. It is our duty as fellow members of a democracy to allow you to do so.

What do you think of a bible study that asks a Trump-supporting member to leave?

Very narrow minded attitude, and it's unfortunate their thought process is that messed up, but they are out there....unfortunately.

I imagine it would be good for this person to receive your forgiveness.

I can't think of anything else that might soften the person's heart...

Or maybe, as sincerely as possible, ask for their forgiveness for following Trump. Could get them to thinking.

If this guy hates people who like Donald Trump that is his problem. Liking a bad president does not make anyone a bad person. As a Christian, he needs to learn "agree to disagree" and wisdom in choosing when to discuss politics. There is a reason I don't talk about Trump on this forum: knowing his supporters post.

How does you having access to post on his facebook page help you again?
Is this a sad day for you?

I would ask him how he can vote for a candidate that supports abortion and infanticide.

Then ask him if he’s read the Bible, the part of the Bible that says “thou shalt not kill”.

Render unto Casear what is Casear's...render unto God what is God's. Sounds like a bible study that is booting Trump supporters missed that part of the scriptures. Then again, judging by such behavior, I'd suspect there are a whole lot of other scriptures that they're intentionally missing as well.

Is it really only bc you support Trump? Not bc of the stuff you post on FB? Do you fit with the group otherwise (like same age range) & mesh with them? How did this all go down?

A Bible study should be focused on studying the Bible. I can see why if there's somebody who is causing a disruption to that, that person would be asked to leave. But if literally the only thing you've ever done is say you support Trump then that's obv wrong. I don't use Fb so Idk how it works with filtering out content but I'd definitely block somebody that was hogging up my feed with posts about Trump. That's just annoying. Blocking somebody on Fb doesn't mean blocking them from your life. Unless you made drama over being blocked on Fb & that then lead to you being asked to leave the group? Did you talk to the minister or somebody else about what happened?

If you're in a Facebook group, you are not signed automatically as friends with the group members, so you would never see the personal stuff they posted off the group, only the posts they put in the group itself.

Now, if one of them is her friends outside the group and sees posts they don't agree with, they could use that as a reason - but they shouldn't since it's personal stuff outside the group.

Sounds more like a social club than anything useful to your spiritual life, cut them loose.
Do you want to support someone whose religion is corrupted by politics, which is the love of the world to the extent said person is full of hatred. which is a work of the flesh.
You can add in contentions and dissension, politics is divisive by nature.

Galatians 5:19-21 New King James Version (NKJV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

I would say that they are immature Christians, and I would pick up my Bible and leave.

There have to be other study groups where God is the main focus, and not Washington. Find one of those groups, and be edified! God bless you.
