  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's your fault that I have to pay more for my daily bread, because you are driving those huge gas guzzling SUVs and pickup trucks.

How come?

Well, farmers are planting more crops to be used for ethanol fuel thereby reducing
acres for raising wheat crops. It all follows the old capitalist rule of supply and demand. Less supply translates into higher prices.

It also explains why I have to pay more than $ 3.00 for a gallon of gas. It's because your bad driving habits are driving up the demand for gas for everybody else.
Oh sure, high gas prices don't worry you because you have no problems doling out
$ 40,000 grand for an oversized SUV or pickup in the first place. But the rest of us with small income are suffering because of your disregard for the rest of us.

Blame greedy oil companies or oil producers such as Saudi Arabia? Give me a break, blame yourself.

If you blame Americans (and there is blame to go around here), then you must also blame the Chinese, Russians, and Indians, who are using as much fuel energy as we are.

Ethanol is not the way to go for two reasons- it's not really clean when you factor in it's processing, and it's use is having a direct, and devastating, impact in third world countries where corn is a staple.

joebudda,

It makes little difference if the value of the Dollar is falling thereby accounting for $ 3.00 plus a gallon of gas.
What counts is our huge appetit for imported oil responsible for large trade deficits and last not least may threaten our national security and well being.

Be a patriot and drive a small car averaging 30 miles a gallon.

Really good OP. Something I really hadn't thought of, but of course you are right.

The rule of supply and demand. Those who are overusing the resource are pushing up the price for all.

Eventually everyone is going to have to rethink their use of energy and start thinking of conservation.

In 1985 I made about $20,000.

Gas was $1.19

The house I now own was worth about $95,000

I now make about $120,000. Gas is $3.14

My house is worth about $750,000

Salary increase is 500%

Gas increase is 165%

Home value increase is 700%

I can't complain.

BTW - I drive a Toyota Corolla

Well, some people have legitimate needs for SUVs and gas guzzling tricks. I am from North Dakota... Try working on a farm with a Honda or something like that. It won't work. That is one of the reasons why sales will always be difficult.

I'd also like to mention that I had a Kia that I couldn't drive in North Dakota in winter because it simply needed to be in the garage when there ws no space. It wouldn't start when it was too cold out. A lot of these cars with good gas miles don't have the power.

Plus, imagine driving in blizzard like conditions in a vehicle that feels like it'll blow away.

There are some legitimate reasons why many Americans drive SUVs.

Not only that, but it feels very safe.

Your food prices are high because our elected officials are either idiots, or bought and paid for by the corn growers of Iowa.

That is really true.

We have a lot of lobbying by farmers because family farms are going under and creating economic refugees yearly. It is a sad experience that every modern country goes through. We are feeling that right now in Korea.

That is nice to bring up. Good point.

jmverville,

If you live in the boondocks and need a powerful vehicle to get around, you are excused.

However, many city folks own those huge gas guzzlers for reasons, I guess, simply to show off.

It really bothers me noticing people driving around on shopping mall parking lots for half an hour waiting for a space close to the mall entrance to open up instead of parking further outside. To lazy to walk a few extra yards.

I will agree with you on that -- when the vehicle becomes an extension of their pride it is a sin... Somewhere in the Bible doesn't it mention pride and vanity as sins? :)

It is a trend that is both foolish due to gas prices as well as harmful to the environment in many ways.

I use the same cup for coffee every day; I use the same cup or bottle for dipping tobacco; I do not flush the toilet when I urinate unless I am in a public bathroom or at a friend's house; I take short showers; I recycle; I only ask for a plastic bag when I have too many items to practically carry; I eat everything on my plate; I sew my jeans up that have holes in them; some of the clothes I still wear today I was wearing in excess of five years ago; I turn my heat off when I leave home for more than a few hours; I always wash my clothes all at once and on 'cold.' I turn all the lights off when I leave.

And I vote Republican.

Living in Seoul for two and a half years has shown me exactly what pollution and waste is; exactly what it means to have public water that is barely drinkable; I think we all have a duty to the environment. It transcends politics and goes back just to the idea of not being wasteful or harmful to my surroundings.

Your one-liner:
The arrogance of "excusing" people for what they do with their own money is disgusting.
It depends on what the excuse is for, not what people do with their own money.
If jmverville needs a powerful vehicle for driving in mountain areas or numerous country roads one can not blame him for having one.
