Why should you FEAR God? God is good is he not? Why is it said, "he's a god fearing man"? Why should one have to fear something that is supposed to be so holy and divine with love and forgiveness?
.
I sort of ask myself the same question. Let's see what we can come up with. The Bible DOES say that fear of the Lord is a good thing. Perhaps "the fear of the Lord" simply means to be afraid to disobey. Maybe "the fear of the Lord" means to realize how great and powerful He is. There is also a verse which says: "perfect love casts out fear". and He "gave us a Spirit of sonship, crying Abba Father in us". So because I love God and I know that He loves me too, I am not quite sure why I should be "afraid".
Perhaps it has something to do with this: one person is coming up to the viper's nest and is not afraid. Why? Because he is foolish/ignorant. Why? because he doesn't realize that the snake will bite him.
The other person is coming up to the nest with taking precoutions. Why? Because he has understanding, he is wise. He knows the danger when he sees it and acts accordingly.
so perhaps "fear of the Lord" is - to know His great power and the consequences of disobedience. Because whoever is living in sin, is disobeying God. And we know that the wages for sin is death. Maybe fear of the Lord equal obedience to the Lord. So godfearing man is the one who obeys the Lord. Like if you have a Father who loves you but who is strict, you would say: I am afraid of my Father. But what are you really saying? I am afraid of disobeying my father becasue He will punish me. The person who has knowledge and undestanding of that fact will say it. But the person who is ignorant of the consequences will say: I am not afraid of him. And then when he disobeys, and the Father punishes him, he learns to be afraid of him. (But it doesn't mean that the person doesn't love him or that the father doesn't love the person)
MAT 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
