Opinion | How Does Trump Stack Up Against the Best — and Worst — Presidents?

The Brookings Institute periodically surveys historians for their opinions on how to rank presidents from best to worst. This time around..

Trump kinda stinks. Dems put him last. Independents put him next to last. Republicans put him at 5th from the bottom.

In other news, Rasmussen's daily tracking poll has Trump's numbers back down to -13, which is just a bit below of where Obama was at this time in his tenure. Ya know, if you care about that sort of thing.

Most historians work for the establishment. Hence, they have to reject Trump.
Based on the largest beneficiaries of Trump's tax cut, it would seem that he's the one beholden to the establishment.

That could be the case, but putting Obama 8th?

A president who accomplished almost nothing except to drag out a recession for seven years, increase the national debt by more than all previous presidents combined, and turn over much of the Middle East to Islamist insurgents? That one?

Quite obviously, no impartial historian could come to that conclusion, even if placing FDR up there is understandable.

It's a bit strange to judge Trump right now since history hasn't had a chance to render its verdict yet.

Reagan was loathed in his day. In the 90's, Democrats had a somewhat affectionate view of him ("so much more sensible than the right wingers of today" and so forth) while Republicans were relatively cool to him. By the beginning of the 2000's, Democrats hated Reagan again ("He let the LGBT community die!") and Republicans had unofficially created a cult around him ("He cut taxes!"). It was officially a Reagan cult after his death.

Roosevelt was beloved by most Democrats of his time. In the 50's and somewhat the 60's, his legacy was viewed as everything wrong with the party at that time. By the 80's, Roosevelt had become more highly regarded by the left and somewhat by the right.

George W. Bush was hated by the left and barely tolerated by the right in his day. Near the end of his second term, the bloom (such as it was) had come off the rose and he was deeply unpopular with Republicans. He's probably ruined that entire family (which I don't see as a bad thing). As to the left, I sometimes think they miss the good old days, back when W and his brand of Christian-infused neo-conservatism were the only things they had to worry about. They will never approve of his administration but, deep down, I think some of them are starting to think he wasn't as bad as they originally thought.

Obama was loved by the progressive wing of the Democrat Party at first while mainstream Republican conservatives disliked him. By the end of his term, the Obama honeymoon had long been over for progressive. Meanwhile, conservative Republicans would, if put to it, admit that while they didn't especially love the Iran deal which Obama made, he still made a deal. Considering the fact that the only other alternative Obama had was war, these conservatives will reluctantly acknowledge that Obama made the right decision in agreeing to the deal. That sentiment has only deepened in the last couple of years.

Anyway. Bottom line, it's premature to judge Trump right now. This topic is ripe for speculation in ten years but right now is far too soon.

was enough to tell us all one needs to know about the reliability of that poll.

Do you care to try refuting the content instead of attacking the source?

Most of his accomplishments centered around civil rights, equality, climate, and addressing the healthcare situation.

The economy was already on the downward trend thanks to his predecessor getting us involved in expensive military conflicts...for which, you can't just rip it off like a band-aid. It takes planning to get us out of those situations we've injected ourselves in and it's not going to happen overnight.

Bottom line, he handed Trump an economy that was seeing deficits and unemployment going down. (Of course, Trump supporters will claim those victories for Trump and continue their uninformed rhetoric of how "Obama was a Disaster" and the "worst ever")

There are two possibilities.

01- Obama presided over the slowest economic recovery in modern times.
02- The markets responded favorably to Trump's victory.

How one views the economic activity that began happening November 9, 2016 probably has some relation to who they voted for on November 8, 2016.

I would say that his most notable accomplishment was the number of brown children he murdered, and the record breaking amount of whistle blowers he went after.

The tax cut benefits those at the lower end also. My paycheck received a noticeable increase.

The university communities and foundations supporting historians wouldn't be caught dead voting for Trump.

Why? Does Brookings have a history of conducting biased polls?

My taxes went up $7.72 per week, and I'm below median income.

That is puzzling. It's a little too soon to try to judge Obama's historical impact. Some historians argue that events don't become history until 30 years after the fact. Others argue that it takes 200 years, with events prior to that being political science, not history.
