Bio-enginering as a hobby. Would you?

Although I don't have the time or enough interest yet, I might enjoy fiddling with bio tech. Apparently it's becoming accessible enough to enter the hobby arena complete with little DIY kits for fun stuff like an algea that luminesces when disturbed.

A company that has run a few kickstarters over the years for projects like glowing house plants is working on several interesting looking projects including glowing trees as an alternative light source at night, a special air freshening plant and even trying to engineer a caffienated apple.

I'd love to take a couple of those apples to work with me each day.

So techies, what do you think?
Would you play with the legos of life for fun (and possibly profit?)

I made some cases for a 6.5x53mmR caliber rifle from .303 British cases. It worked and so far, so good.

I make holsters, mostly for me, from leather. I have some good designs and functional holster and several small scars on my hands.

Not sure about bio-tech. It does sound interesting. Until a beaker of something eats me. I saw a movie called "The Monster That Devoured Cleveland" as a kid...

Bio-engineering in the hands of fallen man. Great.

Not saying there won't be any good things to come out of it. Just that eventually - not if, but when, we'll end up creating things we really shouldn't.

Bringing back nephilim to play in the NFL or NBA would be interesting and all, but that kind of "race" issue I'd rather we avoid.

May I remind you God is still in charge.

I suspect there may be limits in bio-engineering not yet obvious.

Maybe we could make a Dalek?
Perhaps. What is the difference between a psychotic murderer and a Dalek. Other than the armor and weapons; which is a mere distinction of technology.

Then the question arises, what does 'make one' mean?

Without question, the existence of psychotic murderers is certain. Also certain is human civilization has 'made them', even if without intent. I suggest it wouldn't be too much for those who specialize in thought processes and such to find a way to guarantee a number of such persons. In fact, it's a staple of various novels and movies.

However, the developers would have to have a certain absence of moral concepts to 'make' such humans. One is put in mind of certain political movements of the mid 20th Century and the medical experiments carried out.

One also recalls that group lost. Was that due to God's outrage and interference? How can one tell, one way or another?

Their ability to reproduce.
Good point. Somehow Daleks reproduce. I guess you're right, they reproduce by external manipulation. Some one or something 'builds' them.

Which is similar I should say to psychotics. One doesn't simply breed a psychotic male with a psychotic female and have a psychotic baby, does one? I honestly do not know. Nor care to contemplate it.

I think we've derailed the thread. :sorry:

No we have not derailed it. My response is that I do not think we should go in for bioengineering. I was hoping more of us would know the Dalek story. Davros bioengineered Daleks because Dr. Who was too loving to kill him before he could do it. Daleks are a species designed for hate and killing. They reproduce and keep killing. The implication is that if we continue to develop bioengineering, soon such a madman produced by war (this history of Davros is given in season 9 I think) may have the technology to do this.

As a Whovian, I am familiar with Davros and the 'bad tempered pepper pots'. What you say is entirely possible, given what we know right now and without knowing what, if any, limitations we will find.

For some reason, I'm not worried about the outcome. I do not think God will allow it. No, I cannot argue for it. I think most likely the venture and procedure will be too costly for the returns realized and the idea scrapped.

For the record, I am not claiming prophethood.

As I recall, that was not included in the instructions.

But I do wonder about it during coffee breaks.
