For the record, I don't think telling an untruth in a joke is a lie; the joke itself should exonerate one from the charge of "lying."

Before we all go completely off-topic ...

Saying something that is untrue is not always a lie. It is only a lie when we say something is untrue with the intention of making other believe it are true.

It's both immoral and unscientific to make others think something is true when we know there is little to no evidence to support it - that is deceit. Thinking something is true when we admit there is little to no evidence to support it is not deceit. Whether it's acceptable for a scientist to regard something as true when there is no evidence is debateable.

I'd also like to add that "belief", contrary to the way it is often used on CF, does NOT mean "To think something is true without having any evidence to support it". It simply means "To think something is true". Whether there is any evidence for thinking something it true is not part of the definition. Saying "I believe in evolution" would be perfectly valid, for example.

How do you define the Ten Commandments? Were they the Ten Commandments carved in stone, brought down the mountain by Moses, and carried in the Ark of the Covenant, or were they merely the first ten of many laws given to the people of Israel? If the latter why stop at ten?
