  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Something like that, sure. Anyway, we both have the same concern. Doesn't happen all that often around here. We should enjoy it!

No sweat, amigo! I wouldn't go as far as to say the 2 are a contradiction; they're both in the law. About 8 or 9 out of the 10 in Exodus have no meaning whatsoever to most folks in the west, and it could be as simple as "the Christian 10 commandments" are Deut 5, because all but 1 or 2 are relevant to us. There may not be any real claim that those were ever in the Ark.

Now I'm curious about Charleton Heston's movie, if the contents of the stone tablets were ever pictured. Wouldn't it be funny if this all came about from that? ^_^

The biggest reason I see it as a contradiction is that they both state that this is what was etched on the stone tablets.

Fly over it and you can see the border from the plane: it is green inside the border, desert outside it. This does not seem to jibe with your claim.

Do you have any idea how much freshwater they waste to make all of that green? Any idea how much energy is spent on that? You should look it up. With that kind of investment you can turn the Death Valley in California green too, but why if there are much better lands naturally irrigated nearby?

Is it naturally green, or well irrigated? They have nice golf courses here on the Big Island which are surrounded by barren volcanic rock.

Do they? Can you show me where the Deut 5 are said to be on the tablets?

Deuteronomy 5:22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

And it is not even that green, take a look at Google maps, the area around the Nile delta is much greener.

The plot thickens. In a thread about Bigfoot?!? ^_^

Thanks. Man that's a lot of words to carve in stone!

There are many contradictory verses in the Bible. What was supposedly written on the tablets are nowhere near the worst of them.

I dunno, this one seems pretty egregious to me. But you are correct, there are plenty of them.

To be fair, though, a lot of the ones that people claim ARE easily explained, and I wish people didn't argue them.

It is fun to use them against people who claim the Bible is "perfect". All you have to do is to agree with one particularly, and I do love your word, egregious verse and watch them turn somersaults trying to both deny it and support it at the same time.

Well, I looked up some explanations concerning the Commandments, and they usually left out at least one, and often several facts. The only explanation I can see as a possibility is that the set of tablets given in Exodus 34 contained BOTH sets of ten. At the beginning of the chapter, God states that he himself will etch the the original commandments (the ones he wrote on the first set of tablets), but it doesn't specifically state that he did that.

At the end of that passage, it says that Moses etched the "new" commandments. So the tablets would contain the 10 which God wrote on them, and the 10 (possibly 11?) which Moses wrote on them. That, or God did not fulfill his statement that he would write the 10 Commandments on the tablets, and instead left Moses to write the new or old ones down.

Not sure that having both sets on the tablets is consistent with the passage, but at first glance it appears to work.

Edit: it should be noted that the end of the passage refers to the commandments which Moses wrote down as the ten commandments. So even the twice written tablet scenario seems forced, and inconsistent with the text.
