Question 67

The mighty warrior Jaob was captain of the host of David's army.
Joab totally defeated Absalom's army of rebels killing 22,000 men.

67/ How was Absalom finally caught and killed ?

2 Samuel 18:9 Some of David’s men encountered Absalom himself, riding on a mule; and away the mule went, under the tangled branches of a great oak, which caught him by the head and kept him hanging there between earth and sky, while the beast that carried him pressed on. 10 A soldier, who witnessed it, went and told Joab that he had seen Absalom hanging from an oak. 11 Thou sawest him, Joab answered, and didst not smite him then and there to the ground? I would have given thee ten sicles of silver and a belt besides. 12 Nay, said he, thou mightest count out a thousand silver pieces into my purse, and still I would not lift a hand against the king’s son. We were all of us within hearing when the king bade thee and Abisai and Ethai spare his son Absalom. 13 It would have been at the risk of my life, and the thing would never have passed unnoticed by the king; why, thou wouldst thyself be laying information against me. 14 That will not serve, answered Joab; I will smite him myself, and thou shalt be there to witness it. So he took three javelins with him, and thrust Absalom right through with them; then, as he still hung there writhing on the oak, 15 ten squires who attended on Joab ran up and dispatched him. 16 With that, Joab sounded the trumpet, and would not let his men go further in pursuit of Israel, to spare the lives of the common folk. 17 As for Absalom, they threw his body into a deep pit, there in the forest, and piled a great heap of stones over him. Meanwhile, the men of Israel fled away to their tents.

Your answer is correct to question 67 is correct. Very good answer.

Absalom was famous for his good looks and long flowing hair. I like this quote from the Bible.

But in all Israel there was none to be so praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
2 Samuel 14 verse 25

But his beautiful flowing hair was his downfall. It was caught in an oak tree. Joab took his chance and killed Absalom.
With the death of Absalom his army fled in panic.

Question 66

66/ Where did a wench hide two of King David's spies, to stop them being captured by the servants of Absalom who had seized power in Israel form his father David ?

Dysert your answer is correct. A wench covered the well and spread corn on it. The servants of Absalom could not find David's spies. The quick thinking of this wench helped David to escape to safety across to the other side of Jordan. The shrewdness of this wench allowed David to consolidate his forces to attack and defeat Absalom in the next chapter. We dont hear of this wench again but she saved the lives of David and his men. Well done that wench.
2 Samuel 17 verse 17

Question 68

68/ What is a wench ?
69/ How many times is the word wench used in the Bible ?

A wench is a female bondservant. The word occurs 63 times in the KJV.

Answer to Question 68. Yes a wench is a maid servant.

I can only find that the word wench was used once in the Bible.
2 Samuel 17 verse 17

In old English the word wench is sometimes used to mean prostitute.
But in this story the wench is believed to be a maid servant.

I would list the other 62 occurrences, but I'm too lazy to type them in. (I counted the Hebrew word that is translated "wench" in the KJV.)

Dysert regarding questions 68 and 69.

You may well be correct about the usage of the Hebrew word that WENCH was translated from.

But I am quite sure that that word WENCH was used only once in the Bible. I have a KJV concordance.

Personally I dont like the word wench as in old English it is was used to mean prostitute.

Certainly if you called a woman a wench today, the woman would be upset and take it as an insult.

In 2014 no woman would enjoy being described as a wench.

Yes, the word "shiphchah" (strongs H8198) is translated "wench" one time, but appears 63 times, translated: handmaid (29x), maid (12x), maidservant (8x), bondwomen (3x), maiden (3x), womenservants (3x), handmaidens (2x), bondmaid (1x), servant (1x), wench (1x).

King James had many helping with the 1611 translation.
Kudos to you. You're obviously not as lazy as I am. ;-)

YESLORDIWILL regarding question 69.

OK we can say then that Dysert is correct regarding the word that WENCH was translated from.
