Hi

I am excitedly waiting for my KJV large leather bound Bible to arrive.

Im very new to all this and have no idea where to start……reading online you hear some say, from Genesis, then others from John, Romans and so on.

Could I have your opinion on what is going to yield a more personal and fruitful relationship with God as I start this journey to understand his word.

Thank you

David

Hi David!

Everyone has a different way of reading the bible and there is no one right way except the one that will have you continue in it daily.

Personally I like reading cover to cover and then going back and do that over again. In the evenings I read every night before going to bed. In addition, in the mornings I like to do more of a bible study where I will take a certain topic, like truth, or faith etc. and will search the bible for each of those topics which will give you greater understanding of the message collectively.

I would be careful to make a doctrine out of one verse if it doesn't reconcile with the rest of scripture. The most important thing to do before reading God's Word is to pray for the Holy Spirit to open our eyes on the scriptures and ask for God's Truth and then allow that to lead your life, not necessarily what's around you.

Here is a reading plan if you want to read a bit of the OT with the NT.

God bless!

What is your background and familiarity of the Scriptures if I might ask? That way people might be able to direct you in a better way. The one thing I generally advise NOT to do is to read from front to back. You'll drive yourself crazy with Numbers and endless lists of tribes.

Some of my favorites movies have flashback sequences, they start at a scene and then flash back years to let you know how they got there. I would not recommend starting with Genesis and reading the whole way through the first time. Everyone that I know who has said that never did it and fell off shortly into the Old Testament. They started eating at the root of the tree and never got to the fruit.

Probably the best way to proceed is to pray and ask the Author where He'd like you to start.

Thank you very much for helping me.

Ive read the New Testament, but not studied anything, otherwise it’s all new to me. I’m not a great reader, I find it hard to concentrate, although I’ve managed to read a ton of spiritual (Christian) books since being filled with the Holy Spirit. The thought of starting from page one and moving through is a little bit overwhelming. I’ve asked God to help me with understanding his wisdom (for some reason I cried asking for that‍♂️)

I don’t have the intellectual power to make a doctrine and my calling is not for preaching, not for doing amazing Sermon, it’s to be close to God, it’s to use his voice to help other people in need or they lack faith, are anxious, depressed, without peace, all done through love and kindness not reciting tons of text.

So first and foremost I want to get closer in love and wisdom, then I will be better equipped to help other people find peace with their lives. Within all of that will be my message to turn to Jesus and put faith in him. At the moment I’m the description of a spiritual baby living off the milk…….I want to help other people and that can only be done properly if I’m better educated and walking in the Lords voice (I believe )

God Bless you all

David

I know some of the OT can be difficult, but I would definitely read at least Gen, Exo, Lev, skipping Numbers if needed picking back up.

Some of my favorite stories in the bible are Creation, Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Noah. Ruth, Esther etc. so much history there and really foundational teachings.

Thats the best reasons to read the bible. We don't need to be scholars to understand it, that's why we have the power of the Holy Spirit, which will lead us to all Truth if having an open, willing heart. John 16:13

I can relate to what you're saying. Even though I've read a lot of books in my lifetime, I'm a slow and easily distracted reader.

Keep in mind that the old testament is a collection of different writers, rather than novel. I'd say to read Genesis and Exodus and the Psalms and Proverbs and expand from there. 1st and 2nd Samuel is great reading because it's all about David.

I found the more individual books I read, the more interesting it all became. And the really cool thing is I usually came away with something with each daily reading. Over time I've gotten pretty familiar with most of the Bible.

The New Testament is small. I remember it was only 311 pages in my Bible. And even with my slow reading pace I can get through 311 pages in a reasonably short amount of time.

Thank you so much for your love and advice
One last thing, look for Jesus in these stories, you will find most of the bible hero's are a type of Christ and Jesus is on every page. It will take time to develop this, but its powerful once you see it!

This will be an exciting journey for you! I recommend learning how to read scripture first. There are so many literary styles involved that it is easy to take verses out of context. It wasn't until recently that I started to read scripture through the lens of who it was written to. This makes more sense as you move through the pages. Also identify it stylistically most especially, figurative language like metaphors, idioms and hyperbole. This could change from verse to verse. Scripture does not come with instructions so one must equip themselves first. Start with the teachings of Jesus Christ of Nazareth , then move to His Apostels , then history , and then the future. Blessings

I also like this verse...

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

One other thing comes to mind is a lectionary. These are daily readings that liturgical church such as Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran and Anglican use for readings in church each day.

So for example, the Anglican readings for today

Thursday, September 28th, 2023
Morning Prayer: Ps [83] or 116, 117; Two of the following three readings: 2 Kgs 9:1-16; 1 Cor 6:12-20; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18; Coll 381
Holy Eucharist: As Sunday, except: Hag 1:1-8; Ps 149:1-5; Lk 9:7-9; Preface of Weekdays
Evening Prayer: Eve of Saint Michael: Ps 34, 150; Dan 12:1-3; Mk 13:21-27; Coll 424 or FAS 295

I’m not a great reader, I find it hard to concentrate, although I’ve managed to read a ton of spiritual (Christian) books since being filled with the Holy Spirit.
Everybody is different … I also am not a great reader …I wanted to be …..I would see others who would read the Bible for an hour or more ….but my limit was about 15 minutes. I always attributed it to having one eye (not in the middle of my forehead…that would be weird) got stabbed a few years earlier. Maybe it was my attention span, I don’t know. But my saving grace was getting into biblical research. I am not sure why, but I could spend hours researching the depths of the Word, seeing how it fit together. For many years I would work the Word till 2:30 or 3 am… get up at 6 and go to work … I figured I did it when I was partying ….why not put the same into seeking truth.

So, I am not going to tell you where or what to read… but below I will supply you with a brief synopsis of the Bible that maybe will help you with where to start.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Synopsis

Genesis 3:15 to Revelation 22:21…. The basic topic is Jesus Christ.

The Bible is addressed to one of three groups of believers… Jews, Gentiles or Church of God.

Church of God refers to those of us today who have accepted or wish to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior. The period of time we now live is the age of Grace which encapsulates the mystery of the one body of Christ (the one new man). In this age of grace, the believers are referred to as the “church of God”, “body of Christ”, “saints”, “believers”, “Brethren”, “born again believers”, “being in Christ or in Jesus”.

The entire Bible is written “FOR” our learning, but not all is written directly “TO” us, in this age of Grace.. Below I have outlined what books in the New Testament are written directly to us, and what is for our learning.

The book of ACTS….. Is the fulcrum between the Old and New Testament. It shows the rise and expansion of the First Century Church of Grace…starting with the day of Pentecost in Acts 2. It basically gives a synopsis of how the age of Grace evolved.

ROMANS, 1&2 CORINTHIANS, GALATIANS, EPHESIANS, PHILIPPIANS, COLISSIANS, and 1&2 THESSALONIANS

The seven Church epistles in the New Testament, are addressed DIRECTLY to those of us in this age of Grace, those of us born again in the body of Christ…in other words ……………YOU.

There is a portion in Romans Chapter 9 through 11 that Paul (by revelation) is addressing Israel, and then to the Gentiles in chapter 11. There is also a small portion of Romans in chapter 2 which extends into 3 addressed to the Jews) although it may seem confusing, it’s not, as long as you read what is written and to whom it is written.

To simplify matters ROMANS, EPHESIANS and THESSALONIANS are “Doctrinal” Epistles, for right or correct believing….. written for the walk of the believers in the Body of Christ.

CORINTHIANS & PHILIPPIANS are “Reproof” Epistles to show believers where they are off, and GALATIANS & COLISSIANS are “Correction” Epistles to get the believers back to the right believing of the doctrine.

1 &2 THESSALONIANS although a doctrinal epistle deals with the return of Christ for the church of the body (rapture) ….but it also discusses events of the “Day of the Lord” (tribulation). Keeping a sharp eye on pronouns especially they, them …. We, us and others ….(within the context) will allow you to decipher between believers and unbelievers.

1&2 TIMOTHY, TITUS and I will include PHILEMON {although there is some disagreement with this} are called the Pastoral Epistles. These are written to the Church but are directed towards leadership within of the Body of Christ.

HEBREWS is not addressed to the church in the sense that we know the Church established on Pentecost. ….It is addressed to born again believers, but those who have never walked in the freedom of the new birth……. those who are still zealous for the law.

JAMES Much like Hebrews was written to the Christian Jews of the dispersion, “the twelve tribes scattered abroad”. Those born again who seemed to want to put themselves under the law. 1&2 PETER, 1,2&3 JOHN and JUDE closely align themselves to this category also. The reason so much of this seems applicable to many of us …is that we find ourselves not believing the doctrinal Epistles of Romans, Ephesians, and Thessalonians.

THE FOUR GOSPELS give the account, of the life and walk of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from four different perspectives. MATTHEW as the “King”, MARK as the “Servant”, LUKE as the “Man”, and JOHN as the “Son”

The gospels although printed in the New Testament are figuratively the binding or the cohesive bond of the Bible….. they stand alone, being neither in the Old nor the New…… The page that says NEW TESTAMENT between Malachi and Matthew is not God breathed (given by inspiration of God)….it was added. Just as punctuation, chapter heading, chapters, verses, capitalization… were all added by translators over the years…and thank God they were….BUT…they are devoid of authority when it come to rightly dividing the truth.

Although the GOSPELS are vitally important in our understanding of what Jesus Christ accomplished by his walk, death, resurrection and ascension….. it must be noted that Jesus Christ came to minister to Israel, the Bride. Israel rejected Him and killed their King the Bridegroom. The church of the Bride is at this time held in abeyance and picks up again in Revelation.

[[Please NOTE that there is a BIG difference between the two … the THE BRIDE OF CHRIST in the gospels, (which is for our learning) and BODY OF CHRIST in the epistles written directly to us…. they are not the same, and if not distinguished it will cause you much confusion.]]

ALSO: Any reference to the return of Christ in the gospels, is NOT speaking of the return (gathering together of Christ) in 1 Thessalonians……. It is speaking of His return as King of Kings when He returns WITH US (the body of Christ.)

WHY? ↑ …because the mystery of the one body ….the age of Grace was kept secret with God and not revealed until it was given to Paul (by revelation from Jesus Christ) in the church epistles (Romans through Thessalonians)

THE OLD TESTAMENT books.... GENESIS through MALACHI can be divided up into various categories or administrations depending on who you talk to, but they are for our learning, not written directly to us. There is far too much to even begin to expound on this and do it justice.

REVELATION…. So many people want to talk about Revelation…. so I will add this note.
The book of Revelation is written about events of the tribulation that will take place after Christ returns (in the air) to gather us (born again believers) up to be together with Him. …. Whenever The Day of the Lord is mentioned in prophecy (within context) it refers to the entire tribulation period of Revelation not just a single day.

The only people Revelation is applicable to, is those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior; living or deceased and those all those {believers and unbelievers} prior to Age of Grace (Pentecost).

There are those who believe that we go through the tribulation ….or are currently going through it …. Trying to correlate that…. Is futile. It contradicts far too many scripture in the Word of God…and, there are no contradictions in the Word.

You need to pray on the guiding of the Holy Spirit. He's never failed me on where to read. The only time I got messed up is if I decided something on my own but even then there will be at least something edifying. Anyway, you've come to Christ already so some of the usual places to lead someone to for salvation may not apply initially. What you are describing to us though to want to increase your interest in is IMO, 1 Corinthians. Starting right off in the first chapter, even the first verse. Then you can spread out according to God's will. But really saturate yourself with the words there, it says so much.

I will have to respectfully disagree on a few things here.

Especially about Hebrews, most definitely written for us, this where it goes into detail about the New Covenant, established by Jesus based on better promises Hebrews 8:6 God is the one writing His laws in our hearts and minds Hebrews 8:10 Hebrews 10:16 and its no longer based on our strength but God's strength, we just have to cooperate. Jesus is now our High Priest Hebrews 4:14-16 and Meditator Hebrews 9:15 meaning we can go directly to Him for the forgiveness of sins, when we fall. And let's not forget the faith chapter Hebrews 11, all those giants of faith who all sinned, but through their faith, their sins were remembered no more Hebrews 8:12, which is the promise of the New Covenant. Hebrews is a very important book for us, I would not want to think God's New Covenant promise is not for us or miss out on Him being the Author and finisher of our faith. Hebrews 12:2 :heartpulse:

Pick one of the Gospels. Any will do. Then Romans to teach more on why Jesus came & Christian living. Then Genesis thru the 10 Commandments in Exodus to give background.

Then after that, you may want to read all the Gospels & NT, or finish the OT while interspersing NT readings. Just I think the above is helpful when first starting off.

EDIT: I just read his background & what he's wanting. I stand by one of the Gospels & Romans, & Genesis thru 10 Commandments. I echo OT can be hard to get thru, but Creation thru the giving of the Jewish Law is required. Without the Fall of Man, God's promise to restore humanity, & the setting aside of Israel, Jesus is just another teacher. Then since you have some familiarity w/ the NT, pick one of the Gospels. They are easy reading.
Since you are a slower reader & familiarity w/ the NT , would it be helpful to just open it & start reading from what you open? That's what I used to do a lot, especially when I was first getting into Bible reading.
