i guess it is probably difficult for you to find a position with a different specialty?

i have this family members who is a nurse from what i have been told working in retirement home "can" be less stressful however the danger of that is, at least that is what i have been told, is once you get into that area and works for a number of years you may lose some of the skills needed to go back to hospitals again which limits your options should you need them

either way God knows your present and future ask Him to guide you in all decisions

Yeah, I don't quite know what to specialize in because I actually like my work, it's just I feel super exhausted afterwards lol. It is super stressful. And I'm kinda struggling if I can still do this for long, I get scared that I might break my back, or get injured. But I feel stuck, I don't know where else to go lol and transitioning to another job can be hard. But yeah, I'm just gonna wait on God on this.

ok....

based on your username, i thought you are currently working as an RN already?

as for your fear of injuring your back, i am wondering if there are any support braces you might be able to buy and wear now to help minimize your chances of injury?

it seems you are currently working at a hospital? if so, you must be a part of the multidisciplinary team involving other health professionals such as occupational therapists and physical therapists?

if you know some personally already from work, you might ask them for advice on devices you can use to prevent work injuries for the type of work involved...

if not, maybe you can look for opportunities to "snatch" one of them when they are in a good mood and ask them for some advice and point you towards the right directions in terms which websites might give you more information on what your need...

or better still double check with them on which professions would best know this kind of stuff.

though when you do, pay attention to their tone in terms of whether they are certain of what they are telling you or they are a bit unsure.

you don't want end up getting something that would increase your chance of injury.

if you want to search online, bear in mind anyone can post anything these days, it is best to stick to reputable websites

or alternatively you could look for ideas online and verify them with professionals later on, or use those ideas as a starter for finding good search terms that may lead you to information you want in more reputable websites.

Some nursing and hospital work is so stressful that a lot of nurses and workers smoke - sometimes quite heavily - during their breaks, I think. It seems so to me, anyway.

i would imagine so. the problem seems to be with the global recession, hospitals are trying to "squeeze more" out of their nurses, sometimes not placing the nurses that have left their positions.

unfortunately their job descriptions does seem to allow that to a certain extent, I don't think it improves patients safety

You don't think it's a good idea to facilitate nurses' and hospital workers' smoke breaks?

Yeah I'm an RN. I love the unit I'm in, and the pace of things. It's a love and hate relationship lols. My floor deals with stepdowns, neuro, hospice, medsurge, soon cardiac...lol. I guess what makes it really stressful is the pt's acuity is high. I really dont know if I want to specialize yet, cause i'm a scatter brain sometimes. Ughhh but the stress...I'm praying to God to lead me where it fits, I guess if I'm just providing for myself, I'm pretty set, but not the case, i provide for both my parents so it's like heavy.

well, what they do at their break it is really up to them.

i am not sure if increased workload for nurses would or should lead to less breaks.

Yeah, we only get like 30 min breaks and have two 15 min break throughout day i believe, but very seldom can really take a good break, cause always so busy.
And yeah, turn over rate is high.

i work as a sonographer

btw i was going to say have you looked into the possibility of becoming a nursing practitioner?

every country is different, but where i live, they get paid considerably more and has the potential of setting up one's own shop which gives one more autonomy.

you might want to check out what this branch of nursing is like in US in terms of pay and demands for them etc

Oh I see; you were talking more about breaks rather than smoking.

i thought that was you were referring to?

the smoking is not healthy, i am not sure if nicotine would impede on someone ability to perform at their job or not, but unfortunately it is up to individuals to make that decision.

This is not very long, especially for a nurse inundated with work...

I think it would be hard to prove this about nicotine; if anything it might concentrate the mind...

PS: Good to be able to quit if one can, mind you.
