• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,
I have Barretts' Esophagus.
I'm sick to my stomach every day, stomach discomfort every day, I also get
cramps in my esophagus.
My doctor said it can't be cured only treated. Also 10% of those with it get cancer.
Anyone else bothered by this?
What do you do for yours'
Chuck.

Hi,
Actually Barretts' starts out with GERD.
After the lower esopagus takes a continued splashig of acid on the unprotected area, the composition of the tissue there changes permanently. It
causes cramps in the esophaguss our feeling, aches and pains in the affected area and into the chest and even the left shoulder. When the stomach is empty
it feels like it's gnawing on itself and causes nausea and aches. They take a biopsy every so often to check it's
condition. They check to make sure it hasn't moved to a precancerous condition. I can't eat anything I'd like to,
Chuck.

Oh dear, that sounds awful. I am sorry to hear that. I get pain in my oesophagus and into my stomach and I also get pain in my back between my shoulders. Today I am particularly uncomfortable. I haven't had an endoscopy although it has been mentioned that I might need one. Will wait and see.
Chocolate seems to be one of the worst things to eat for me, what foods do you have to avoid?

Blessings

I'm supposed to avoid coffee, spicy foods,
carbonated drinks, onions. There's a list they gave me, but i find that if you experiment, you can get away eating some things you're not supposed to.
It all depends on how your stomach feels at the time.
Chuck.

Mine never got as far as barrets, but they wanted, (and still do ) to do surgery to prevent reflux.

I have had other medical problems, and lost my job, and am now on medicaid.
So I have had to switch my reflux meds tha t worked(prevacid x 2)
to extra stuff to just get a measure of controll.

I realy need too loose weight again, I lost 70 lbs in 2000 and my reflux went away (and healed up some)
I need to try it again, as I really dont want surgery.

I am the same way about foods.
Some things you would never suspect, I can eat no problem, then others are like swallowing battery acid.

My mom found out she has this four years ago. We were really upset about it! At first she was so good at not eating or drinking all her favorite things (which are of course on the no-no list!) but now she indulges pretty regularly, for which she gets harassed by us!
