  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Typically, you would need to meet with the pastor at the church you wanted to be baptized at and he or she would discuss it with you. But, Baptist follow believers baptism which means you would need to make a decision to be a follower of Jesus first before you were baptized. Any time after this decision is a good time to have this done.
I have baptized people before who were not members of the church because they had some kind of relationship to people who went to the church. Most Baptist churches follow the Biblical model of baptism which is immersion in water.

If you want to be old school go to a church and.....

"And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in living water. But if you have no living water, baptize into other water; and if you cannot do so in cold water, do so in warm. But if you have neither, pour out water three times upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. But before the baptism let the baptizer fast, and the baptized, and whoever else can; but you shall order the baptized to fast one or two days before. -Didache"

If you don't want to be traditional have a friend do it. Either way you are fine.

I must ask the question: What is baptism to you? What does it mean and signify?

I must ask the question: What is baptism to you? What does it mean and signify?

John 3:5
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2:38, 41 (NLT)
"Peter replied, 'Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.' Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church--about three thousand in all.”

Baptism will cleanse me and be another step towards my salvation. I wish to change and turn away from sins and be new again by the Lord. I wish to start a new life after baptism and dedicate everything in my life to the Lord. It will make me feel closer and make me feel stronger for what I believe in.

Wanting to be baptized definitely shows that you want to publicly show that you are ready for change. If you have already accepted Christ, then your life has changed and you are committing to become a strong Christian. If you are not a church member somewhere, then seek out a church and talk with the Pastor. He is responsible for that ordinance and can advise you better than most of us.

How should one do about getting baptised?

Baptism picture one being baptized into death and being raised into newness of life, therefore immersion would be the means.

Is there a time when one will know its the right time for this to be done?
In the scriptures it follows their profession of faith. They normally will do that after having discussed it with you.

What if you don't go to church and want to be baptised?
Why would someone not go if they have given their heart to the Lord and desire to grow in their understanding of what scripture teaches. The church is made up of the body of Christ. There you will be taught that it is the blood of Christ being given that took away the sin debt, not water baptism nor anything else. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Would you need to join a church first to show dedication then ask for this to be done?
Just by your questions show why you need to be involved in a local church, they will answer your question from the bible and teach you how to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.

Welcome to the family. John 1:12 to as many as receive Him to them gave he the power to become the children of God.:amen:

Thank you. I am only recently Christian this year and have just been studying the Bible alone via a bible correspondence , doing this has has worked for me a lot and probably was my first step into learning about the word. So far i have completed John and the next is Romans which i will begin tonight. I also signed up to Biblestudytools. com which has some useful resources for me and topics. I haven't felt ready to join a church but it is something I have been highly considering lately its just finding the right one in my community. I pray the Lord will show me the right one :amen:

Anything that I say will only be suggestions, you have the last say whether to apply it or not with no hard feelings. I am only sharing what the Lord has taught me these last 38 years. I would visit the different churches to see how the people are and what the preachers teach and ask the Lord to guide you as you go as to which one would be for you. At an early age in one's walk they often are over guided by feelings and emotions so it is important to make sure that scripture is being taught and that will take time to learn what is right and what is wrong. Nevertheless, with the Lord as your light the path will become brighter and brighter as one learns and applies what they learn. I of course would recommend a Baptist church because I believe they are closer to the teaching of scripture as the Lord has led me. But that is up to each to decide. There are many fine sights that have a lot of teaching aids. Studylight.org a good one as biblehub.com and John MacArthur of Grace to you will let anyone listen to all of his over 40 years of teaching free or download them to your computer. They are listed in bible text order or sermon topics at gty.org. Heb 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Phil 2:13 for it is God working in you to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Hi TINM,

God bless you and may He be forever praised! For His love and mercy endures forever for those who love Him.

Being baptized is a very important part of one's journey with Jesus. You are correct that Jesus seemed to be speaking of the very same water baptism that he himself received when he explained to Nicodemus that one must be born of water and Spirit. I would draw your attention to Jesus' baptism as an example of 'how' one should be baptized. It should be at the hands of another believer and by full immersion of the body in water.

John the Baptist had spent many, many days baptizing by the river Jordan and I'm pretty sure he picked that spot, or God led him to that spot, because that is how baptism is supposed to be.

As for the right time, well, when you have believed the truth: that Jesus died for your sins and on the third day was resurrected to life by the Father, then you should be baptized. However, don't let your walk with the Lord stop there. My encouragement is, and I myself followed this path, once you have believed the truth that you then sincerely and earnestly pray to the Father to give you wisdom and discernment through His word. That He give you an unquenchable thirst for His word.

If you don't attend a regular worship service, then I would encourage you to find a strong bible believing fellowship and talk to the pastor about being baptized. If that isn't workable, then there really isn't any command or instruction that a baptism be performed within the walls of a building. Find another believer, and I don't mean just some 'hail fellow go thy way' Christian. Someone that you truly believe and respect as a believer in the Lord Jesus and ask that person to baptize you. I would recommend a man since that does seem to be the example of the Scriptures. However, let me repeat, as a young believer, there are ravenous wolves outside of the flock, and even within, that will now try to tear you apart from your faith and you really should look for a strong bible believing fellowship with which to be a part. It is not good that we not join with others from time to time for refreshing and encouragement.

God bless you little one. He is a great and mighty God. Rejoice that He has had mercy upon you for the Scriptures say that no one can come to the Father unless he draws them.

In Christ, Ted

Thanks very much for your comment. This has encouraged me to try and find the suitable place and people to help me achieve being baptized. It is something I feel strongly about doing as I cannot doubt at all what Jesus has done for me and everything else that is in the Bible. I now need to find the right place and people to help me do this.
God bless and thanks once again for your comment!

I was saved at 6 and baptize at 36. I waited till i was called and did not feel called utill i was 30, then at 36 i could literally not take it any more and was baptize in a bath tub. After I did It I wonder why I had waited so long. It was the happiest day of my life. I had never felt joy like that before it was great. When I went under the water(being buried with Christ) It felt like i was in the grave with Christ. There was this pure peace and calm, and it felt like i was under the water for hours. But I did not worry about my breath, My body felt very dead, but i was at peace, and when i cam out of the water The Holy Spirit hit me, and man there is nothing like life jumping right into your body. I mean you leap. It is pure peace and life. It was great.

You are commanded to be baptized if you are saved, pray to God about it see what he says.prayed for you.
