People debate about whether you have to be submerged or sprinkled, baptized in running water or standing. The key to Baptism is that you are making a conscious adherence to God's call for us to be Baptized. There is no explicit guidance on any of the above methods, only that we are baptized. As with many Christian issues, legalism should not reign. If you intend to be baptized for the remission of sins and do so in a Christ-centered church, then there is no need to worry about the method.

God bless,
Dave

There's a lot of different views on this. My personal view is that all modes of baptism are valid. :) I have yet to be baptized but when I do get baptized, I think I will prefer immersion.

The idea behind submersion is that symbolically the old, sinful self is dead and buried and then raised up fresh and anew. The book of Luke briefly records Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River. We oftentimes assume Jesus was taken under the water during His baptism because the Scriptures say the Jordan River was deep and also afterwards, Jesus came up out of the water. Of course, John the Baptist could have sprinkled water on Christ's forehead for all we know.

My point is, the method of baptism isn't what's important. God led me to baptism by submersion, but what about those who cannot be submerged into a baptismal pool (people with disabilities, etc.)? If they're sprinkled, are they not obedient? I highly doubt God sees it that way. The baptism is an outward expression of your faith and obedience. God sees the heart.

Baptism by submersion is a powerful image of death and life as fluffy_rainbow stated, and I would encourage the practice of this physical image of what has happened in our hearts.

Sprinkling is an alternate that makes allusions to that image of submersion so for all intents and purposes is the same. Especially for the elderly and disabled who may have physical problems with submersion.
