The gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit is so precious to me - I have been a Christian all my life, but until I received the infilling I did not know what a personal walk with Jesus was.

You are so fortunate to receive this precious gift so young in life - you will be a witness to many and the Joy of the Lord will shine through you and draw many to Jesus.

Don't get wound up in trying to define it or trying to improve it - just place your hand in the hand of Jesus and let the Holy Spirit lead you - you will know when you should be using the tongues, you will feel the leading of the Holy Spirit -

I'll give you 2 good examples - my friend and i were on business out of town and in the middle of a conversation my friend said pray in the Spirit, pray now - when we got home her neighbor had been in a car accident at that very minute and his life was spared.

Another time I was out in the yard and the feeling came over me to pray in the Spirit - come to find out the next day - my son and his wife and 4 year old twins was in an awful car accident - rolled their SUV 2-1/2 times landed upside down - no injuries, except some hair pulled out of his wife's head.

Just follow the leading - when something happens and you don't really know how to pray - just start praying in the Spirit - it is your spirit talking to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will never lead you wrong.

Just enjoy your new gift and hold it dear to you - don't let people who are into legalism confuse you - it is not complicated - it is a gift from God and He will show you how to use it.

I realised I've posted a lot of threads on here latley, but I've had a lot of questions :)
Last night I was baptised in the holy spirit. I spoke in tongues for about 3 minutes, and my body was shaking and God was speaking through me, in praise of him.
I have prayed again in tounges this morning, so I know and am thankful for having it.
Right now, I'm just asking for a bit of advice on how to use it to the best possible way, general things to know and verses that relate.
And anything that will help to not drift away would be really helpful.
God bless you all
pray as much as possible in tongues, u had the more reactive receiving. I was calm when i received him.

Unlike most people I am not sure the Holy Spirit is in me? How do I know? If you say 'If the Holy Spirit is in you, you will not have doubts' then in this case it is not me, because I doubt. I asked for it to be in me, I want it to be in me? Am I not listening to the Spirit? I certainly am trying.... I want to know what God wants for me, but I never seem to know what hes saying...Is that my mind talking? or God?

dmart:
Have you repented of your sins and asked for forgiveness? If you have you have a very portion of the Spirit of Jesus within you.

This is where faith comes in - you just feel the Joy of the Lord - there will be times when you are reading the Bible and you feel certain words jump out at you - that is the Holy Spirit tapping you on the shoulder and saying 'I am talking to you.'

You will feel a little nudge in your spirit telling you to do something or say something. JUst talk to Jesus, pray to Him. The Bible tells us that He is closer than a brother - He is your friend and will always be with you.

You will learn to hear His voice and feel the leading of the Holy Spirit - just don't even question if HE is there - He is, and just have the faith to believe that because that is what the Bible says. You will learn to tell when you are suppose to do something or to pray - just put your hand in the hand of Jesus and go forward and show the Joy of the Lord in your walk.

I know how ya feel, at times I have doubts as well and do things I really should not but then I start to think on it and do my best to stop. I myself am a knew Christian..here lately when I do something that I feel is sinful I instantly know inside..and sometimes I dont know until later..I do ask for forgiveness and am trying my best to live the Christian life..I think it is normal to struggle though...after reading some of the things in this thread it makes me wonder if you have to speak in tongues to be saved..and that scares be because I have never spoke in tongues..is it a necessary thing you have to have to be saved? Or is it just what it says...a gift? Some people have it and some dont...?

1 Cor.12:7-11, 28-31 "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills...28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. 29 All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? 30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? 31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts

I was reading and noticed that one of the study notes in my bible said this: "12:9 Faith. Distinct from saving faith or persevering faith, both of which all believers possess, this gift is exercised in persistant prayer and endurance in intercession, along with a strong trust in God in the midst of difficult circumstances"

So I believe I just found the answer to my own question heh. As for feeling weak compared to others, well im sure everyone feels that way because sometimes I dont feel a thing, sometimes I feel just like the world..then I realize that I cannot be perfect..and eventually notice the error of my ways..its a process, lifelong. The very fact that you admit to feeling weak compared to others makes me think that you care enough about it to want to grow, and that seems like a sign of faith to me. :)

I've used this verse in a few threads now, but it never hurts to hear it :). It is very important that you remember, your salvation is not based on feelings. It is based on an unbreakable covenant.

Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God who can not lie promised before time began.

This is a very calming, and reassuring verse you are saved, you do have eternal life, why? Because God promised that if we believe and accept what Jesus did we will be with him for eternity. Speaking in tongues there are many many Christians who don't even believe tongues are for this day and age, they say it's just babbling I strongly disagree with them, but my point is they still believe in what is truly important and they will be with us with God forever. :)

Set your mind to be in tune with what God is doing. If your heart and mind are in this stance, then whatever your mouth is doing isn't going to cause you to fall.

Whether it's right or wrong should not even be an issue, because it is simply the Holy Spirit using you to activate things in prayer. It is not the process of tongues that are the focus, but the prayer. It is like singing, or dancing, or chanting... these are just physical expressions of spiritual thoughts.

God could ask you to walk around a city and hit clay pots... lay on your side for months... He knows the reason that certain processes accomplish useful ends. Tongues may not make sense, but they are there in Scriptures. Their authenticity wouldn't be an issue if they weren't there. There are all sorts of things in Scriptures that we might not want to deal with... things that contradict what we believe God is about. Studying scriptures is a long-term process, and living out God's Words can look different from year to year.

The teachings connecting tongues with salvation have absolutely no grounds. Very few Charismatic groups teach this doctrine, but it happens, and people suffer for it. There are no scriptural mandates for speaking in tongues. But there are enough positive references to consider this part of Christianity.

Congrats!! Stay around the strong saints for development. Very important get into worship everyday. When u feel the quickening power of the Holy Spirit moving continue to worship until rivers of living waters explode. The tongues are a sign of overflow. Your oil is running over in Jesus name amen!! I well remember my days of fully participating in the ecstatic experiences that the unique fusion of West-African animism and Methodism could elicit. Christianized slaves still kept their animistic practices such as tongues, etc. and it eventually became known as Pentecostalism. It is what it is.

By their fruits you shall know them.

The indwelling of the holy spirit bears fruits.

We are told what the fruits of the spirit are. If you have the spirit you must display these fruits.

The gifts of the spirit are given to different people. Not everyone has every gift. Many claim to have the gift of the spirit but do not exhibit the fruits thereof. Impossible! By the way this is not targeted at anyone in particular, I am speaking generally.

Many people in the bible had excellent prayer lives. Elijah prayed and fire reigned down from heaven. David prayed, was thrown in a Lions den and was delivered. They never prayed in tongues. Jesus was asked by his disciples how to pray. Note that Jesus is the same one we are praying to. Jesus gave them a model prayer. He did not pray in tongues and he was filled with the spirit as his baptism clearly showed.

We should not focus on outward and emotional signs to have us know who has the spirit. That is the devil's method of deception. He cannot use the truth so he can only use signs and miracles. My simple point is to focus on what is inside. Focus on the fruits of the spirit and stop striving for some sign to dictate to you what is going on in you Christianity. Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. Praying in tongues is never mentioned in the bible anyway.

I believe in the gifts of the Spirit the HGhost does as he wills. When he operates their is no lack the job gets done we are just a vessel ready to be used. The tongues are for the church. I know u are right about outward signs that will fool people but the HGhost bears witness of himself. Your private worship will be reveal in the coporate worship. There are many Christians who have the salvation down pack but they don't baptism of the HGhost enpowers man for service. I have witness it over and over again people receiving the baptism of the HGhost w/evidence of speaking in tongues. As you do this daily it builds up the inner man. So if you haven't try it your missing a great deal. The Devil deception is to tell you that it's not true. Give Him 6 months then come back to me. Please don't put God in a box esp. in these endtime harvest. The body of Christ needs power from on High!! Miracles are stil happening!! Be bless!!

Can you really tell me what are the benefits of speaking in tongues. Does it help me love my neighbor more. Does it help me display the fruits of the spirit. In a practical sense how does it help. Jesus had the full power. He never spoke in tongues yet his words touched the hearts of thousands. He never prayed in tongues and never taught or told his disciples to do so. The disciples did speak in tongues but it is clear that they spoke in different languages.Paul says he rather spoke 5 words in his own language that the brethren can be edified than 1000 words in an unknown tongue. Paul also says that if anyone speaks in an unknown tongue in the church there should be someone to interpret. He places a focus on having the brethren understand whatever is being said so that they can be edified. If you yourself have no idea what you are saying, I can't see how it can be edifying to you. The bible is filled with people who prayed and poured out their hearts to God and he heard them and answered their prayers. In a practical sense, what does praying in tongues do, that praying in your own tongue and with your own understanding cannot do?

An experiment was carried out among pastors who claimed to have the gift of interpretation of tongues. The recording of someone speaking in tongues was played for them separately and they were each asked to interpret. Each pastor came up with a totally different interpretation. Something must be wrong there.

@ ProphecyKID -I believe like you do that the word of God is are source and is rhema to those that hear it.My focus is on the life of the believer in personal relationship with God (Elohim). I wil name a few benefits of speaking in other tongues: (1) Tongues is pulling out treasure in earthen vessels - Paul states (2 Cor. 4:7) We have this treasure in earthen vessel. The anointing and the glory are the treasures inside of us. (2) Tongues is getting drunk on the new wine of the Holy Spirit - (Ephesians 5:18) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is BUT be filled with the Spirit. Why would he command them to be filled with the Spirit if they were already filled? Being filled w/HSpirit isn't a ONE time event;it is a continous event. Paul said further, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteosness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. That's what happens when the BELIEVER receives Christ and is saved. He becomes the HABITAT of the Holy Spirit which is joy unspeakable and full of glory.Speaking in tongues will stir the wine of the Spirit to keep you joyful. You can't be depressed when the joy of the Holy Ghost is in your life. The scripture states, The joy of the Lord is your strenght( Neh. 8:10) and when joy is in your like, you will be strong the reason so many believers Christianity is dry is due to the fact they aren't drunk on the new wine of the Spirit. The new wine of the HSpirit will make your Christian life an adventure. The experiment where can i find this info Sir? Who church and does this represent the whole body of Christ? Jesus didnt have to speak in tongues because He is God and this is a commandment to the church!! I will take up the FRUIT of the Spirit next. Be Bless!!

Sorry about some people having negative experiences.

I prefer to believe in Scriptures including speaking in tongues can help you love your neighbor more. Jude 1: 20But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”

OP - you asks for suggestions so here's a couple. Just thank the Lord for this language because He gave you this language to pray to Him (I Cor 14:2). Continue to speak in tongues because it magnifies Him (Acts 10:4). You can asks Him to help you make intercession and sing in the spirit (I Cor 14:14. Rom 8:26, I Cor 14:15). It was prophesied by Isa 28:11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people." Yahweh gives believers good gifts (Luke 11:13).
