In January of 2008, researchers at the California Department of Public Health published a paper in the Archives of General Psychiatry that was widely reported to show that vaccines play no role in autism. Noted researcher Boyd Haley has graciously given ARRI permission to publish his response to this study.-

We should all consider that there are two top priorities in the vaccine/autism issue every American should be concerned with. We need to develop a safe vaccination program, and we need to find the cause of autism and eliminate it if possible. I have been a strong proponent of investigating thimerosal as the casual agent for autism spectrum disorders based on the biological science that shows thimerosal to be incredibly toxic, especially to infants. I know of nothing remotely as toxic as thimerosal that numerous infants would be exposed to before 3 to 4 years of age. Below I present several comments regarding this issue and the 2008 Schechter-Grether study that I think are relevant. Mainly, while the Schechter-Grether study appears to be a well done study it suffers from the fatal flaw of assuming that thimerosal was removed to safe levels in vaccines by 2002. They also cut a fine edge as to time when a significant drop in autism rates would be expected. Further, no study exists that proves our vaccine schedule alone is safe, let alone the current one that still exposes infants to thimerosal, a concern they do not address. The alarming concern is that these authors seem more involved at providing material saying thimerosal is safe than they are concerned with the obvious fact, openly presented in their own data on autism rates, which strongly indicated that increased rates of autism started with the CDC mandated vaccine program. References to support the comments are readily available in many recent publications.
1. Autism was not a known, described illness until about 1941-3, 8 to 10 years after the introduction of thimerosal and similar organic thiol-mercury compounds in biological mixtures used in medicine and other areas. This argues against autism being a genetic illness.
2. In 1977, 10 of 13 infants treated in a single hospital by topical application of thimerosal for umbilical cord infections died of mercury toxicity. This same topical was used on adolescents without obvious ill effects which strongly supports the concept that infants are very susceptible to thimerosal toxicity.
3. The recent increase (starting about 1990) of autism spectrum disorders correlated well with the advent of the CDC mandated vaccine program which increased thimerosal exposures with increased vaccinations. Due to its toxicity, thimerosal would have to be suspect for causing autism.
4. As expected by science, extensive searching for a genetic cause of autism has not turned up a significant find that would explain the recent increased rate in autism. The latest genetic find, at best, might explain 0.5% of autism causation. Most agree that a genetic predisposition is likely (like those that lead to low glutathione levels), but that a toxic exposure is absolutely needed. Consider also, that this increased toxic exposure would have had to occur in all 50 states at about the same time as all states have reported similar increases in autism rates. Only something like the government recommended vaccine program fits this need for a time dependent, uniform exposure of a toxin throughout all the states.
5. In the Schechter-Grether study it is implied or assumed that all thimerosal containing vaccines were gone by the end of 2002 due to their expiration dates. I don't think this is a valid assumption. I have talked to mothers who asked to see the vaccine inserts as late as 2004 and found thimerosal present as a preservative in infant vaccines being used in certain clinics. Also, in 2004 the influenza vaccine was recommended by the CDC for infants 6 months of age and older. It would appear as if a thimerosal free vaccine time-frame would be very hard to identify, if one ever existed. I have read that the average age of autism diagnosis is near 44 months of age. Therefore, while it does seem reasonable to expect a decrease in autism after 4 to 5 years of complete thimerosal removal, assuming a consistent diagnostic protocol was used, it appears this has not been accomplished. This means the Schechter-Grether study is likely somewhat premature in reaching the conclusions reported in that enough time has not passed for the expected decrease to occur and that they were quite optimistic in identifying the dates of thimerosal reduction and underestimate exposures occurring between 2002-4.
6. If, indeed, the complete removal of thimerosal from vaccines was not followed in an appropriate time by a decrease in autism then this would be solid proof that thimerosal was not causal for autism. However, thimerosal has not been completely removed from vaccines and thimerosal used at the original levels in the manufacturing of these vaccines with trace amounts left in the vaccines when bottled. I don't know what level trace is since it is not a term used in science to describe an actual amount. Some called the 12.5 micrograms mercury in the older vaccines a trace amount. Bottom line, the infants are still getting some level of thimerosal, a trace amount that is free and an amount of ethylmercury that is bound to the proteins that induce the immune response. If vaccines are causing autism and it appears this is a strong possibility based on the California data and, if removing thimerosal added as a preservative really does not reduce the autism rate then the causation is much more complex.
Consider the possibilities that:
A. Autism may be caused by a thimerosal modified protein that sets off an immune response or causes some other biological reaction that can cascade with injurious effects. Since the vaccines are manufactured with thimerosal present in abundance it is quite likely that any cysteine containing proteins would be modified with ethylmercury. Removal of most of the free thimerosal (or just not adding it) would not decrease the level of any toxic modified protein produced during the vaccines production that might be causal. Removing the thimerosal added as a preservative would not decrease the amount of this ethylmercury modified protein in those vaccines with trace thimerosal levels.
B. That autism could be caused in susceptible individuals by very low thimerosal or ethylmercury modified protein exposures due to their genetic susceptibility or other factors (general health, gender). In this scenario the higher thimerosal exposures are not required and the induction of autism is not thimerosal concentration dependent at the old and new thimerosal vaccine levels, but just requires a significant exposure level that is met by the vaccines containing the lower trace amounts of thimerosal and past thimerosal levels in vaccine production processes. Bottom line, if genetic susceptibility is involved then causation of autism may not increase linearly with increased thimerosal exposure. Causation may only require low thimerosal exposure or exposure to modified proteins. It is possible that the reduction of thimerosal as in the trace was just not enough to produce a safe vaccine.
Not all toxins work like alcohol and the old dose makes the toxin is not always correct. As long as they are used, the mere use of trace thimerosal in vaccines along with higher levels in the flu vaccine will always prevent a conclusive answer to thimerosal's involvement in autism causation. What should be studied is the no exposure versus the exposed populations with regard to autism rates.
7. If indeed autism is rare among the non-vaccinated Amish populations, as reported by Dan Olmstead, I find it an amazingly oversight that the CDC and others responsible for infant health do not fund a study in this area. This study could go both ways, if the Amish have autism rates identical with the rest of the population the argument would be over---neither vaccines nor thimerosal would be causal for autism, and I personally would argue in this direction. If, however, the autism rates in the Amish are exceptionally low then vaccines would have to be considered as a prime suspect in causation with the presence of the highly toxic thimerosal the main suspect.
If the results in the 2008 Schechter-Grether study hold up with time, and complete removal of thimerosal does not cause a drop in autism rates and the autism rates in non-vaccinated populations are low then something else in the vaccines would have to be considered the major causation factor for autism. However, without doing the non-vaccinated population studies there cannot be a conclusive statement either way about either vaccines or thimerosal as being causal for autism. The steadfast refusal of the CDC and others to support such studies being done is part of the reason that many parents, scientists and physicians have severe doubts about the sincerity of their efforts to resolve this issue. This is how I think, when I review a paper submitted for publication I always ask why an obvious experiment wasn't done. The study of non-vaccinated populations is a very obvious experiment that the CDC and its supporters appear to refuse to consider. This makes me suspicious that this knowledge exists and is being suppressed because knowledge of the rate among the non-vaccinated population would answer many questions.
Finally, the Schechter-Grether study may be good news to the vaccine manufacturers and those who recommended and use the mandated vaccine program as it serves as manufactured uncertainty about the thimerosal involvement in autism causation. However, it presents a major concern to the parents and families of infants since it implies that our vaccines, even with most of the free thimerosal removed, may not be safe and that our CDC does not have a clue about what to do make them safe. Common sense would lead most to attack finding the cause of autism instead of trying to prove something besides thimerosal is causal. The major question is are our vaccines causing autism---only comparing the non-vaccinated to the vaccinated will answer this question. Common sense would have lead to this comparison being done first and being done 10-15 years ago. In the recent past I have recommended that parents vaccinate their children with thimerosal free vaccines as I considered them safe. If Schechter-Grether are correct, and vaccines, but not thimerosal, correlate with increased autism rates, then I am in error assuming vaccines are now safer with regards to autism risk than they were 2000.

Flu Vaccine Misses Flu Strains....Again

Every year, officials at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) look into a crystal ball and try to figure out which strains of Type A and Type B influenza will be prevalent in the U.S.. Sometimes they guess right and sometimes they guess wrong. This year, they guessed wrong as more than half of the influenza virus strains circulating in the U.S. right now are Type A and B strains that are not covered in this year's influenza vaccine.

In a typical flu season, only 20 percent of all flu-like illness is actually influenza. In 2003-2004 a mini-epidemic of a more severe type of influzenza caused by the A/Fujian strain occurred around the world, including the U.S. In spring of 2003, federal health agencies and the pharmaceutical industry knew the genetically mutated type A flu was emerging out of Asia and causing significant complications, including death, but chose not to include it in the 2003/2004 flu vaccine formula after the WHO voted to stay with strains that had been included in the previous year's formulation (A/Panama, A/Caledonia and B/Hong Kong). Without informing the public that the flu vaccine did not contain the strain of flu causing severe flu that season, the CDC heavily publicized child flu deaths in the fall of 2003 and Americans stood in long lines that fall and winter to get flu vaccine, which caused a vaccine shortage and subsequent CDC-recommended rationing of flu vaccine supplies. Those who are suffering with an especially nasty bout with the flu this year can take comfort in the fact that natural experience with type A or type B influenza will produce immunological memory that will help minimize the risk of a severe case of that same strain of influenza when it circulates in the future. In fact, pandemic flu planners are counting on the superior, longer lasting cell mediated immunity of those Americans, who have actually recovered from influenza infection in the past, because drug companies won't be able to produce pandemic flu vaccine fast enough to provide doses for everyone for up to a year after the pandemic begins.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The influenza vaccine given to Americans may not protect as well as expected, U.S. health officials said on Friday as the number of flu cases increased nationwide.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said slightly more than half of the influenza virus strains reported to its surveillance system are not good matches against the strains included in this flu season's vaccine.
The number of states reporting widespread flu activity jumped to 31 this week compared with 11 a week ago, the CDC said. But Dr. Joe Bresee of the CDC's influenza division said there are no indications this flu season is worse than usual.
"Seasonal flu activity was slow to start this year but has increased sharply in recent weeks," Bresee told reporters.
One measure officials use to gauge the severity of the season is the number of flu-related child deaths. Bresee said the CDC has heard of six U.S. children who have died from the flu, a relatively low number compared with recent years.
Flu viruses mutate and change all the time, so every year a different vaccine is created as officials predict which particular strains will circulate.
The vaccine is designed to protect against three influenza strains -- two from Type A, an H1N1 and an H3N2 version, and one for Type B.
Bresee said about 30 percent of the overall strains of influenza in the United States may be a Type A strain that emerged in Australia called H3N2 A/Brisbane. It emerged too late to be included in the flu vaccine offered in the United States beginning in September and October.
The Type B strain chosen for this year's vaccine also was not a good match for most of the B virus strains seen in the United States this flu season, Bresee said.
"While a less-than-ideal virus match between the viruses in the vaccine and those circulating viruses can reduce vaccine effectiveness, we know from past influenza studies that the vaccine can still protect enough to make illness milder or prevent flu-related complications," Bresee said.
Bresee noted that decisions on the composition of the annual vaccine are made about nine months before it is made available to the public in the fall, and it is sometimes hard to know that far in advance which strains will circulate.
Flu vaccines take months to make. Bresee also said some resistance is being reported to the antiviral drug Tamiflu, made by Switzerland's Roche Holding AG and Gilead Sciences Inc of the United States. Of the viruses tested in CDC flu labs, 4.5 percent are resistant to the drug, Bresee said. Influenza kills an estimated 36,000 Americans in an average year, and puts 200,000 into the hospital, the CDC said.

health authorities to "Green Our Vaccines."
The message that our children are getting way too many vaccines way
too early, that the vaccines are toxic, and that thousands of parents
are reporting a reaction to the vaccines that results in autism for
their children has resonated with many.
Our children are being pushed into the River Autism by a bloated
vaccine schedule managed by a conflict-laden "Vaccine Lobby."
Thousands of parents and doctors are pulling as many of these children
out of the river through biomedical intervention and trying to keep
more children from being pushed in through education, awareness
campaigns, lawsuits, and civil disobedience.
Meanwhile, the Vaccine Lobby (comprised of the CDC, AAP, vaccine
manufacturers, and Autism Speaks) has been building a castle on the
banks of the River Autism. They are doing their best to pretend they
don't see the children being pushed in by denying the epidemic, and
they certainly never acknowledge the ones we are pulling out through
recovery.
Unfortunately for the Vaccine Lobby, the River Autism is swollen and
rising and the castle they have built is made of sand-it's starting
to crumble.
We are entering an extraordinary time in the autism debate where the
pace of science, news, and activity all seems to be breaking the way
of the thousands of families who believe vaccines played a primary
role in causing the autism epidemic. Our voices are being heard, and
more reporters, politicians, and everyday Americans are starting to
ask tougher questions and demand real answers.
It can't happen soon enough. Let's stop and consider the recent news:
Government concedes that vaccines caused autism in second test case
Back in June of 2007, when the tests cases in U.S. Vaccine Court first
began, David Kirby reported that "On Monday, one of the most important
legal proceedings in American medical history will get underway at the
U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington."
David continues with some more background:
These three judges from the federal "Vaccine Court," as it is called,
are about to dip into the raging, contradictory waters of the
vaccine-autism contretemps, knowing they must emerge on the other
side, each with their own acutely anticipated decision about
causation. Ultimately, they must deliver judgment on some 4,800 claims
that have been languishing in the system for years.
Just eight months later, in an article written yesterday by David
Kirby over at Huffington Post, perhaps the greatest bombshell in the
history of the vaccine-autism debate was just dropped: for test case
number 2, the Government lawyers conceded that vaccines caused a child
to develop autism. It doesn't get any bigger, or simpler, than that.
From David Kirby: After years of insisting there is no evidence to
link vaccines with the onset of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the US
government has quietly conceded a vaccine-autism case in the Court of
Federal Claims In its written concession, the government said the
child had a pre-existing mitochondrial disorder that was "aggravated"
by her shots, and which ultimately resulted in an ASD diagnosis.
"The vaccinations received on July 19, 2000, significantly aggravated
an underlying mitochondrial disorder," the concession says, "which
predisposed her to deficits in cellular energy metabolism, and
manifested as a regressive encephalopathy with features of ASD."
We have officially entered a new era in this debate.
Scientific consensus on toxins
Just last week, the Institute for Children's Environmental Health
issued this Consensus Statement Document
"Accepting childhood exposure to contaminants that result in
compromised learning and behavioral abilities violates the basic
tenets of biomedical ethics. The principle of beneficence ("do good")
requires that the benefits be maximized while the harm be minimized or
eliminated. Respect for autonomy or personhood is violated when
children are unnecessarily exposed to harmful substances. Respect of
person also implies informed consent, and no child has given the
informed consent for exposure to harmful chemicals. Finally, the
principle of justice requires that burdens be shared equally, and
because children are more vulnerable they endure a greater burden. It
is wrong to allow the exposure of children to environmental agents
that cause learning and developmental disorders."
If you get the eerie feeling that we are looking at Global Warming II,
you're right.
Mercury was a problem. Sorry.
Robert A. Brumback, MD is the Editor-In-Chief of The Journal of Child
Neurology. In November 2007, he was forced to preside over an
extraordinary situation where:
* An article published in the journal in June 2004 called "Mercury
Exposure in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder" had concluded
that mercury in blood was NOT related to autism.
* A reanalysis of the data from that study, published in November 2007
and called "Blood Levels of Mercury Are Related to Diagnosis of
Autism: A Reanalysis of an Important Data Set" showed that mercury
blood levels and autism ARE correlated.
In a November 2007 note from Editor-In-Chief Brumback about the
fiasco, he wrote:
One of the philosophical myths associated with science is that invalid
information published in scientific journals will be exposed by
scientists who find that a particular study cannot be replicated.
Unfortunately, this is rarely the case An analysis of the original
data by Dr DeSoto was performed at my request and resulted in a
different statistical conclusion.
Oops. I guess we're not all that crazy after all.
Give vaccines later.
Three weeks ago researchers from the University of Manitoba published
a study covering a topic that has never before been considered in the
scientific arena: could delaying vaccinations improve health outcomes
for our kids? The headline from the Winnepeg Free Press speaks for
itself: U of M researcher links asthma, early vaccinations.
A quick excerpt from the article:
Children who have their routine vaccinations delayed by two months or
more cut their risk of asthma by half, a University of Manitoba
researcher has found.
This study builds directly on an article I recently wrote about from
University of Washington Surgeon Donald Miller, M.D., called "A
User-friendly Vaccine Schedule" where he writes:
"New knowledge in neuroimmunology (the study of how the brain's immune
system works) raises serious questions about the wisdom of injecting
vaccines in children less than two years of age."
As a parent who watched his son develop eczema (another autoimmune
disorder) within hours of his first DTP shot at two months old, this
is no surprise. The implications of this study go way beyond asthma,
since many children with autism suffer from autoimmune issues.
On February 12th Generation Rescue recommended a safer vaccine
schedule for our kids, based in part on this study that shows "later
is safer."
Give fewer vaccines.
In November 2007, a press release from Oregon Health Sciences
University dropped another bombshell about vaccines:
OHSU Research Suggests America May Over-vaccinate
An excerpt from the press release:
"A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine this
week by Oregon Health & Science University researchers suggests that
timelines for vaccinating and revaccinating Americans against disease
should possibly be reevaluated and adjusted. The study shows that in
many cases, the established duration of protective immunity for many
vaccines is greatly underestimated. This means that people are getting
booster shots when their immunity levels most likely do not require it."
And, an article on WebMD about the study noted:
"Eventually, the research may trigger a rethinking of the current
revaccination schedule, Slifka says. For instance, the CDC now
recommends that adults who got immunized against tetanus as a child
get a booster dose every 10 years. In the future, Slifka says, that
recommendation may change, saving time and money without affecting
protection."
The government conceded vaccines can trigger autism. Scientists issue
a consensus paper warning about the relationship between toxins and
neurological disorders in children. A journal had to retract a study
that exonerated mercury, and in fact showed that mercury and autism
are correlated. A delay in immunizations dropped asthma rates by half,
and we are giving way more vaccines that we need to.
It's a new era, folks. To paraphrase Barack Obama, we are the change
we want. Our time is now.

manifested as a regressive encephalopathy with features of ASD."
We have officially entered a new era in this debate.
Scientific consensus on toxins
Just last week, the Institute for Children's Environmental Health
issued this Consensus Statement Document
"Accepting childhood exposure to contaminants that result in
compromised learning and behavioral abilities violates the basic
tenets of biomedical ethics. The principle of beneficence ("do good")
requires that the benefits be maximized while the harm be minimized or
eliminated. Respect for autonomy or personhood is violated when
children are unnecessarily exposed to harmful substances. Respect of
person also implies informed consent, and no child has given the
informed consent for exposure to harmful chemicals. Finally, the
principle of justice requires that burdens be shared equally, and
because children are more vulnerable they endure a greater burden. It
is wrong to allow the exposure of children to environmental agents
that cause learning and developmental disorders."
If you get the eerie feeling that we are looking at Global Warming II,

Mercury was a problem. Sorry.
Robert A. Brumback, MD is the Editor-In-Chief of The Journal of Child
Neurology. In November 2007, he was forced to preside over an
extraordinary situation where:
* An article published in the journal in June 2004 called "Mercury
Exposure in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder" had concluded
that mercury in blood was NOT related to autism.
* A reanalysis of the data from that study, published in November 2007
and called "Blood Levels of Mercury Are Related to Diagnosis of
Autism: A Reanalysis of an Important Data Set" showed that mercury
blood levels and autism ARE correlated.
In a November 2007 note from Editor-In-Chief Brumback about the
fiasco, he wrote:
One of the philosophical myths associated with science is that invalid
information published in scientific journals will be exposed by
scientists who find that a particular study cannot be replicated.
Unfortunately, this is rarely the case An analysis of the original
data by Dr DeSoto was performed at my request and resulted in a
different statistical conclusion.
Oops. I guess we're not all that crazy after all.
Give vaccines later.
Three weeks ago researchers from the University of Manitoba published
a study covering a topic that has never before been considered in the
scientific arena: could delaying vaccinations improve health outcomes
for our kids? The headline from the Winnepeg Free Press speaks for
itself: U of M researcher links asthma, early vaccinations.
A quick excerpt from the article:
Children who have their routine vaccinations delayed by two months or
more cut their risk of asthma by half, a University of Manitoba
researcher has found.
This study builds directly on an article I recently wrote about from
University of Washington Surgeon Donald Miller, M.D., called "A
User-friendly Vaccine Schedule" where he writes:
"New knowledge in neuroimmunology (the study of how the brain's immune
system works) raises serious questions about the wisdom of injecting
vaccines in children less than two years of age."
As a parent who watched his son develop eczema (another autoimmune
disorder) within hours of his first DTP shot at two months old, this
is no surprise. The implications of this study go way beyond asthma,
since many children with autism suffer from autoimmune issues.
On February 12th Generation Rescue recommended a safer vaccine
schedule for our kids, based in part on this study that shows "later
is safer."
Give fewer vaccines.
In November 2007, a press release from Oregon Health Sciences
University dropped another bombshell about vaccines:

An excerpt from the press release:
"A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine this
week by Oregon Health & Science University researchers suggests that
timelines for vaccinating and revaccinating Americans against disease
should possibly be reevaluated and adjusted. The study shows that in
many cases, the established duration of protective immunity for many
vaccines is greatly underestimated. This means that people are getting
booster shots when their immunity levels most likely do not require it."
And, an article on WebMD about the study noted:
"Eventually, the research may trigger a rethinking of the current
revaccination schedule, Slifka says. For instance, the CDC now
recommends that adults who got immunized against tetanus as a child
get a booster dose every 10 years. In the future, Slifka says, that
recommendation may change, saving time and money without affecting
protection."
The government conceded vaccines can trigger autism. Scientists issue
a consensus paper warning about the relationship between toxins and
neurological disorders in children. A journal had to retract a study
that exonerated mercury, and in fact showed that mercury and autism
are correlated. A delay in immunizations dropped asthma rates by half,
and we are giving way more vaccines that we need to.
It's a new era, folks. To paraphrase Barack Obama, we are the change
we want. Our time is now.

With almost 5,000 similar cases pending in vaccine court, we are confident that this is just the first of many that will confirm what we have believed for so long, vaccines can and do cause children to regress into autism, says Wendy Fournier, parent and president of NAA. We call on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to acknowledge that the current vaccine schedule is not safe for every child and as with the administration of any medicine, individual risks and susceptibilities must be considered for each patient.
While thimerosal has been phased out of many pediatric vaccines, it is still used in flu shots recommended for pregnant women and children. At a meeting of the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices held yesterday at the CDC, the committee voted to recommend annual flu shots for all children up to the age of 18, and to date has refused to state a preference for mercury-free vaccines.

Ur kiddin. I only had one injection and yet I got AS. I havnt had a injection ever since. Poor kids who get those flu shots and develop AS, that is a tragic story and I feel for those kids.

mmhmm, I tottally agree with u 2scoops. I think it should end and the Health ministers can read these facts that means that ppl wont get AS like I got it. A real tragic tale but unfortunatly I dont think that the health ministers have read these facts because they havnt stopped giving out the injections.

What the, how dare they do that. If u call special schools for either disabled or needing help kinda kids yea there r some helps out there for us. Disabiltys benefit is one too. Theres a special needs school for NZ special needs girls in Nelson (went to that) and one for boys in Christchurch. Another good one is Sara Cohen School in Dunedin (went to that the year before hand actually) and it was really terrific. Workbridge is helping me do a computer course in April, organising it from the inside out so thats another advantage too. Thats all the helps I know of. There is a website for Salisbury School and it is pretty known. I dunno bout the one in Christchurch though. Here is that website, there is no pic of me on it though.
