I'm not angry. I feel sympathy for those who are so brainwashed by a cult.

Atheism is not a cult, it isn't even organized. The only thing all atheists share is a lack of belief in deities, we don't share any political views, philosophy, lifestyle, etc.

Exactly.

E.g., one of my ex-friends is an atheist and is a radical right-winger republican.

I have also known a Marxist who was of course an atheist.

I remember many years ago I went to an atheist convention and a questionnaire was filled out by everyone. Something like 20 per cent of them were republicans - generally old goats who were white - and about 12 per cent were anarchists/communists/socialists. The rest were liberal democrats or libertarians - mainly under the age of 40.

Being an atheist does not mean you are necessarily attached to any particular positive ideology. As is said, atheism is the rejection of the claims of supernatural religion as being non-evidence based.

Of course, if we define atheism in a narrow way as someone who does not believe in a creator humanoid personal god then most Buddhists would qualify. Even some Hindus.

Plus, a deist is not a theist. So, in the narrow sense, is a deist a type of atheist. Personally I don't care. I'm just saying.

Uh, deists aren't atheists, they believe that gods exist, they just reject organized religion. Deism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uh, yes, I am aware.

But there are LOTS of christians who classify deists as atheists because just believing in a first cause god who does not interfere or contact humans subsequently is basically atheism to them.

They are wrong? Well, sure. But try telling them they are wrong and then let me know how that goes. lol.

BTW, those who believe that a god exists but who just reject organized religion - the proper name for them, I think, would be philosophical or independent theists. E.g., the late science writer Martin Gardner.

Boko Haram have been kidnapping children for years and the West knew all along; yet somehow it is big news now? Something tells me the West is preparing something for Nigeria.
Does Nigeria have oil? Yes?

Well, of course we have to intervene and bring our daughters home!

Otherwise, I think, not so much.

OK.

But before I get on board with the "conspiracy to get oil under cover of concern for kidnapped girls" thingy I think I will wait a few days if not weeks or months to see how it all shakes out. I.e., for the nonce I'll remain a strong agnostic on this question of "actual" motivation.

If it turns out that the conspiracy idea is about as factual as the moon landing "hoaxes" conspiracy then at least I won't have egg on my face.

If it turns out I was wrong not to jump on the conspiracy bandwagon then all the conspiracy "kooks" will no longer be kooks but will be able to tell all the rest of us "I told you so." That will be quite atisfying, no doubt.

Greed does not require a conspiracy, but will seize any convenient excuse.

I do not claim a conspiracy, but I do see a world full of tyranny and horror and find it interesting that the media only seems to care about injustice in places big business covets.

But we are off-topic.

Actually it isn't OIL we desire from Nigeria...it is all those millions of dollars the various princes of Africa and children of various African leaders are offering us here in the US via e-mail.

By my estimates (supported by most economists) easily 3/4 of all the money that flows INTO the US economy comes from American citizens stashing money in American bank accounts until the relatives of various African deposed leaders and royalty can get all their money out of Africa.

It's EXTREMELY important for America's economy. So of course we will take action because Nigeria is important to us.

Indeed and if I may add the money American petroleum companies make of which little trickles down to the local economy.
