I'm an atheist, but I have a quick question for you.

Why are you using the following "faith icon"?

Why not this one?

"Atheist" is such a vague term. What is your particular world view? Are you a naturalistic humanist? An objectivist? A marxist? A naturalistic pantheist? An eudaimonist?
Or are you one of the many who do not really put much stock in epistemology, philosophy and metaphysics, and just define yourself over the faith you reject? (IOW, "I am an atheist because theistic concepts fail to convince me.") Which, of course, is perfectly alright as well.

well for the most part, i am 20 years old and still and college and trying to find answers and here is how far i have gotten so far.

i am an atheist but not out of hate, but living life and going through experiences, a long with studying in and out of church, asking questions, and trying to find reasons with in certain things.

Now my world views is a broad subject as well, because there are a lot of aspects to look at. But the world is infested with religion and that is what i love about it along with the psychology behind the human mind. How religions start, why we believe in what we believe, and so much more can go one from there.

But if you would please be a little bit more percise on what you want to know i can explain what i feel and what i believe, but i must warn...

1. atheism/ atheist taken from literal definition just means i dont believe in god
2. what i say i believe in other aspect past atheism, every atheist are different in there own way

i love answering your questions though so always feel free to ask

Are any choices that you might make better (e.g., more right, more good, more moral, etc) than others you might make? If not, why not? If so, what standard of evaluation do you use to judge the worthiness of your choices? What makes your actions worthy of being chosen?

I have a question, or two...

Why did you chose to be an atheist? What particular event, or series of events convinced you beyond question that there is no outside power exerting itself on our day to day life?

How do you explain the "overnight conversion" that some atheists go through and suddenly become Christians, literally from one moment to the next?

eudaimonia,

If what you are asking if how i make better choices, the answer is really i way the options. For a lot of people, one is either one whom conforms to society, or completely goes against or does not consider what society thinks. I input what society thinks, depending on why they believe. For instance, the society i live around, for the most part, frowns on gay rights. But there really is no logical reason why so instead of rebelling against it i will simply find a reason why it is wrong, with the thought that there is no real definition of wrong other than the lack of being right.

How does one acquire beliefs to become a 'true' atheist? What is the difference between a true atheist and an untrue atheist?

Like most skeptics think almost instantly. What is the definition of a true atheist. Being an atheist is easy, is searching that is hard. Atheist do not believe in god, i do not think there is one, but what this tells me is how the rest of my life will be in certain situations. There is no instant forgiveness, i rely on the people that i hurt or offend by mistake to forgive me on there own. I do not look as everything happens for a reason, although at the same time not saying that everything does not happen for a reason some do some don't. I can not prove there is or is not a god but i can be certain. An untrue atheist is rare because atheism is frowned upon and taken negatively in this country, so being untrue and calling ones self one is really rare.

Good question!!!

This is a problem that i have. There is no choice to an atheist when in comes down to that. But i have been in the church (baptized evangelical( and it closed down. I asked myself why would god do this. It was a question i had but not yet lost my faith. As life goes on me and my family started going to and catholic church, which was not bad. Then i got interested in science stuff, but just basic science. Then when i grew up, i started to think too much and the chances of the christian god being real is almost impossible, 99.99% the only reason that the .01% is that there still could be a god i can not prove that. So it was literally growing up in the real world and understanding that life can not be explained but experienced

Now with the overnight conversion you speak of can be one of two things.
1. a person got fed up with his/her religion and did this out of hate
2. a person that experienced what i did and while searching went "thats it i am an atheist"

these are both potential problems because the first one is not an atheist, they are just mad. The second one could of heard one story that changed there mind. I did not. I can not pin the day i was atheist and it does not matter, all i know is that i am one now and am the happiest i have ever been since. I did not just click and became an atheist, i started agnostic and slowly lost the thought that there is a god.

Hi atheist_jc, thanks for giving us this opportunity!

What do you mean when you say that you are a "true atheist"? In other words, what has to be true of a person for them to be a "true atheist"?

I consider myself a true atheist because i did not become an atheist because my parents were nor because people i am around me told me to be one and that it is the right answer. I experienced life, studied, and gave every religion an equal chance. So i say a true atheist because it was my own choice and i do not listen to every person i hear because they have an opinion. I ask question on why they think. I understand euphemisms almost everywhere i go, but not saying i am perfect at it.

Why did you join CF?

I actually joined because on bing.com, this was life the second thing to come up. But the reason i joined was to help explain what an atheist is, other than all the negative things people think or over assume. People in my neck of the woods do not understand how one can not believe in a god. In most cases, atheists are not seen as people in some peoples eyes. So i am here to answer any questions people might have, but not with the intention to convert, i promise.
