There isn't a Progressive Adventist denomination, so it is a matter of the heart.

If you have serious issues with the 28 fundamental beliefs, or with the worship style, or music, or Ellen White--things like that, then I'd say you are leaning more towards what they've labelled on this forum as progressive.

Were you baptized into the church?

Glad to have you here, and I hope God leads you down whatever path you choose.

Welcome JF,

To put it in the most simple terms is this...

Tradtionals hold to and believe ALL the 28 fundemental statements of the OFFICIAL SDA church.

The liberal off-shoots (progressives) do not. They DOUBT and fight against almost all of the established doctrines of our church.

Hope this helps.

And SPEAKNOW is right--there is no such demonination as the Progressive SDA church--no such animal. They have no standing anywhere.

I suspect like most stereotyped labels the element of truth here is very small.

She's absolutely right, there is no such denomination as Progressive Adventism.

It's not recognized anywhere and they do not have separate churches from the established SDA churches in this country.
The church called Traditional Adventism does not exist either. However there is a church called the General Conference of Seventh Day of Adventists, and none of us owns the copyright to the name.

The established SDA churches in this country have 28 fundamental beliefs.
Which are subject to change/being updated as and when the General conference meets, so calling oneself Traditional would imply no change at all. So if the GC decided to scrap the present 28 will a Traditional protest take place.

P.S these labels are so stupid.....

MOI--yes--they are subject to change--but as they STAND NOW--those who live under them as members of the GC SDA's--have agreed that they are sound or else they would or should have relinguished their membership in this denomination.

And so--YES--we DO OWN that name as a priveldge of AGREEING with it's tennents. Just as I have the privledge of OWNING my husbands last name when I agreed to the marriage RULES.

Labels are NOT stupid--they stand for what the beliefs are behind them as to avoid confusion, which is what the liberal offshoots are all about.

Perhaps you missed my post about the Boy Scouts of America. For over 100 yrs their NAME (label) has stood for integrity, right living and goodness. But now the GAY agenda has decided that THEY have a right to become Scout LEADERS in that organization. There is a lawsuit pending because the Boys Scouts have said that homosexuality is NOT not now or ever has been a tennet of that organizations by-laws.

So let me ask you Moi--should the gays be able to take that name and make it their own if they are ruled against in a court of law and then decide to start their own BOY SCOUTS? NO--a thousand times NO!

A GOOD name is a treasure to protected.

Perhaps you have not seen the list about the various different Adventists, if the G.C can live with em all, why can't you. You seem too eager to cut people off who think differently from you. Contrary to what you want you don't have a monopoly on the name. And sometimes changes occur because ordinary members i.e we have discussions. Or do you think everything the church practises right now has God's blessings?

Why the hostility Moi? I'm trying to explain to you that 'lables' are not stupid--thats MY opinion. If you don't agree--than fine--no big deal. But I DO have a right to explain my position on ANY topic in here. And I'm NOT CUTTING anyone off. I may p--- them off--lol--But I certainly am not cutting them off.

Do I agree with all that the GC is advocating today? Nope--but I do agree with and adhere to the 28 FUNDAMENTAL beliefs of the one and only Seventh-day Adventist church? You betcha! If I didn't--I would remove my name from their books--pure and simple!

What I WOULDN'T do is start attacking those members who choose to believe in them as so many do in these forums.

No hostility in my mind, unfortunately body language is often misread on internet forums and since humans are poor mind readers most times we read anothers written intentions incorrrectly.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. Yes I was baptized into the church and I hold dear the 28 fundamental beliefs. It is strange how this morning when I originally posted this question I was thinking about a dream I had last night. I had dreamed of a dark black abyss it was huge and deep. I threw a big rock into it and it never touched bottom, it never made a sound. I was thinking about it this morning as I posted my question. I went to work today; I work at The Home Depot here in Fayetteville North Carolina. A gentleman came in, he was covered in sweat, and he had a heart attack I gave him mouth to mouth while a friend of mine assisted in applying CPR. Unfortunately he died. I believe the abyss in my dream represented death. I am retired US Army an ex Paratrooper and I have dealt with many un-nerving situations. I must tell you that in my dream I was truly and deeply frightened of the abyss. Once awake I shrugged it off as just a dream. When that man died today it came to me with all of its might; Jesus conquered death. I have never felt so small and so humble in all of my life.

Hello,
I am at the Cross Roads of Traditional and Progressive SDAs. This is very serious for anyone who finds themselves here at the Cross Roads. Could someone please tell me (accurately) the differences between the two? Therefore I can decide where my heart lies. Thank you in advance.

JF5000,

Whatever you decide to do make sure that you make the Bible the rule of faith.

Best of luck,
Chris

Hi, and welcome!! ^_^

Firstly, I'm sorry you have to come in here at a time when there is so much confusion and tension in this forum. Hopefully it all straightens out soon.

Secondly, then I'd say you are very much "traditional", as we call it here. :)

That dream is very interesting. It's so amazing when God can speak to us sometimes, and we can see Him much clearer..Even if it's through such grim circumstances.

Before I became a Christian, or even picked up a Bible..I had a dream of the Second Coming. At the time, however, I had no clue what it was. That was 3 years ago and I still remember it fairly clearly. I've never had a dream so real, to the point I got actual physical pain from it.

The amazing part is that my friend had a near heart attack when I discribed it, and he said it matched the second coming so perfectly. Yet I'd never read of it, nor did I know what it would be like (apart from movies, I guess). So it could not have come from my mind.

In the dream, I was one of the ones who were destroyed. And oh the pain and fear and sorrow. I don't believe I actually saw Jesus, but more knew what was happening in a strange way. I woke up as I died. To this day, I have no clue why I dreamt it..other than God trying to show me the reality of what I was facing before picking up my Bible. :)

My sympathies go out to you, though, because what you went through must have been really hard.

Blessings and Love,
Sarah

Hi JF5000,

Your statement about "being at the crossroads" is one that every SDA should be looking in the mirror asking themselves which one of the crossroads they are going to take. That may sound like a strange thing to say but if you will forgive me for taking a few moments of your time I'll try to explain.

Let me start by saying that the dream you had, followed by the experience with the poor man that you tried to help at work, I personally would take as a gift from God. He certainly got your attention. You certainly haven't forgotten the whole experience. And whether you feel it or not, I think God, through the unction of the Holy Spirit, caused you to choose to come here and post today.

You are not the only one who is at a crossroads. Oh, I know the answers you have been given here have helped make it pretty clear for you as to where you stand. However this is just the kind of discord that we are told will take place in these end times. There will be many, both SDA and non-SDA who will stand at these same crosroads in the not too distant future. The only way anyone can make a right choice as to which road they will take is to use the only road map we have for the road of salvation, God's own Word the Bible. I say this because each of us needs to be able to defend our faith from the Bible alone. Am I a traditional SDA? I guess you would have to say that I am if holding the 28 Fundamental Beliefs is what is required. But I would hope that others can see Christ first and then ask me, By the way what church do you attend?

May God put His loving arms around you, the Holy angels protect you, and the Holy Spirit guide and comfort you as we travel salvations highway to our heavenly home.

Respectfully, your friend and brother in Christ,
Doc
