• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been attacked with asthma/ bronchitis seasonally for the last 5 years. Does anyone have suggestions of natural ways of preventing it from happening?
I usually end up at the doctor, for a dose of prednisone(steroid) that clears it up.
The last time I had a case of it she (the doctor) prescribed Advair (also a steroid) . It works, but I'm getting problematic side effects, where the cure may be worse than the disease. I have been praying for an alternative to this.

Hello @RoBo1988 et @LizaMarie, for many years as an adult I got a sinus infection in October that lasted until April (all the while taking antibiotics of various kinds/strengths which most often held it at bay, but never got rid of it). Then I was introduced to an herbal remedy called Echinacea which changed all of that.

Just FYI, echinacea is an extract from a flowering plant by the same name (see below). I believe that it works by bolstering our immune system, particularly our upper respiratory tract, to make it more resilient (just to be clear, I do not suffer from Asthma).

If I do get sick, it's a flu or cold now, not a sinus infection, and it doesn't happen often (I am rarely sick most years, not even once, though that has become a little more difficult since our four-year-old granddaughter, who we see regularly, goes to daycare). If I do get sick, I also get over it much faster than I used to

BTW, it doesn't help me with GI illnesses/infections (stomach flus and the like), but upper respiratory-wise, I am typically and thankfully healthy all year long now :)

In case you are interested, I use this brand of Echinacea (though it is made by a number of different companies and in various forms, liquid, pills and even as an additive to tea).

If you'd like to hear more about it (how I use it/how it has been most effective and why, etc.), just let me know.

Praying for you!

God bless you!!

Thanks. Currently not attacked by asthma, but I stopped taking Advair because of some high PSA readings(prostate). I had 3 tests in 2 months; the first 2 were high, then higher, and the urologist said if it reads high again, I'm heading to biopsy, or MRI. Was praying about this, and The Lord spoke asking: "what are you doing that you weren't doing a year ago(when PSA was normal)?" Advair was the only difference. A Google search confirmed that it can affect prostate. I quit using the inhaler for 3 days before I tested again; my numbers came back normal for my age. Hallelujah for that, but want to prepare for the spring, when I seem to get congested. Thanks again.
