Hi there,

Comments on the Passion 'Translation' welcome...

It is the work of one man claiming prophetic insight.

Generally embraced by the Mega Church movement and under scrutiny by bible scholars.

Thanks.

Hi Carl
Other than how the Bible translates passion (that of suffering) is there something I am missing .. What is the prophetic insight?

The author claims to have had a download from God and presented a fresh take on scripture as a modern prophetic voice.

Many are taking hold of this given the authors obvious charisma.

He claims to being spoken to by God in some detail as to what to present.

Bible Gateway have removed it.

I had never heard of it .... I didn't realize it was several volumes of work. Nor did I realize that Bible Gateway used to incorporate it ...apparently it's been dropped by them.
I have never heard of Brian Simmons and had no idea of his work but I am extremally hesitant whenever someone has a new prophetic message from God.... I thought God was really satisfied with His original God breathed Word.

Just looking at the verse comparison feature on the web site makes it seem like a rather loose and sloppy translation. Actually I wouldn't call it a translation at all, more of a paraphrasing.

For example, whereas other translations have a very similar version of Psalm 23:

"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (NIV)"

this version says

"The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough."

The idea that the Lord is my best friend is not part of the original texts as far as I know. And lacking nothing is not the same as having more than enough. Just one example.

It does sound more like a paraphrase than a translation.

It is the work of one man....

That says all I need to know. Virtually all of the main-line translations were done by highly educated teams of people with many years of experience and knowledge of the original texts. While I may use it in lesson planning if it does put a verse in a way that makes more sense or would be a better way of putting something when applying hermeneutics, it is not a translation I would ever feel comfortable with unless there was a general consensus that this one man got more right than the translators with hundreds of years of knowledge and study between them.

Anyone claiming prophetic revelation and then proceeds to rewrite the entire Bible is a huge red flag for me. The mega churches like to use it because it is Gospel sophistry and culturally relevant. Anyone seeking to feed the flesh rather than the spirit will embrace it.
Blessings.

I haven't looked at it. I didn't even know about it until I started encountering people talking about it and going into some details about it. I've heard nothing good about it.

1. It's the work of a single person.
2. That person claims special and unique prophetic insight directly from God.
3. That person claims to be working with "Aramaic originals" which don't even exist.
4. It specifically uses language that reflects the individual's very particular sectarian views.

Each of those even on their own, if true, would be a huge red flag.

Does That include the YLT which has one author who was excommunicated for heresy and still features on Bible Gateway ???

Personally, I make an exception for Young's due to my reasoning that most Biblical scholars and experts on the languages endorse the YLT.

That is one source. In general, to be honest, I've never heard or read a negative word spoken on it. Every hermeneutics professor I've ever had has used his translation from time to time in their lessons. Also, the fact that it's now been around for 160 years and is still widely used for in-depth study is a testament to the general consensus of biblical scholars.

Please note: I was referring to the YLT by mistake. It was the CLV.

The reason I have misgivings is that the author was excommunicated for heresy on several counts including denying the trinity.

Then I see one of our members with a similar tendency to deny the trinity quoting exclusively from this translation.

This raised a flag for me and I think the issue should be investigated in more depth.
