And it is totally impossible for you to imagine that people can overcome instincts (if the even might be what you - seemingly rationally - assume to be), and realize as true what their thin veneer of rationality tells them?

They are much better at retrofitting rationalistic justifications onto things primarily driven by instinct, without even realising that they are doing it. Nobody knows that better than advertisers.

Ok, it is totally impossible for you to imagine what I asked you.

Do you think that this is an instinctive reaction with you?

It is mildly irritating when atheists, who think they are oh so scientifically sophisticated, only manage to pay lip service to the fact that they are themselves the products of evolution. Like every other species on the planet, they are driven primarily by instinct, and the rationality they set so much store by is just a thin veneer on top of that.
That's generally what science tells us. Socialization is key. Who are these atheists, exactly?

If I dug deep enough into why self congratulatory atheists irritate me, I would doubtless find an instinct down there somewhere.

Leslie, please don't get me wrong, I want to live. Especially as I am mentally and physically healthy.

Maybe being afraid of death is like being afraid of the dark. Once you realize there is nothing to fear, you quit being afraid.

Of course, I don't have Hell, or it's equivalent, hanging over my head. Or the plethora of other gods, any one of which may the "true" god, and many of those are going to send you to an equivalent of hell simply for not believing in them, no matter what else you done. Do those sound like loving gods?

Something about blacking out and knowing I never existed is kind of frightening.

What's your take on it?

I believe the correct word for me would be "terrified". Not a rational fear since I do not believe in an afterlife but the thought of non existence fills me with fear.
