Are words powerful, Or just to the world? (aside from Gods Word)

Words have the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21). I like to look at conversation as simply an exchanging of words. So in the exchanging of words self-discipline is important. It is not personal. If we take it personally it may become personal through actions. I believe that is why it is written:

"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" 1 John 3:18

There is no misunderstanding actions because they are in Truth. Words can be misunderstood because they come from the abundance of the heart. The heart of the speaker and the heart that is laid open before the eyes of the Father.

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of" Luke 6:45

So what we may perceive as "evil" or "good" things would often be vastly different than what God already knows. Only He and our own Spirit know the intention and meaning behind the words we speak. So He already knows if what was spoken was good or evil. In the same way, we can know too because His Spirit lives inside of us.

"For who knows a person's thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God" 1 Corinthians 2:11

In conclusion, I think sometimes Truths that are spoken in Gods Word become overcomplicated by an understanding that does not belong to Him. This is just one thought process concerning the importance of words or the unimportance of words. Some fruit for thought, however it is perceived.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2

Primarily addressing the title of the original post: All words are enormously powerful. They are the primary method of revealing your choice and will to other people and angels (what angels see/hear matters: Luke 12:8-9). They are also an expression to God which has a finality to them that doesn't happen by only thinking about the words (although you can give such thoughts that finality).

Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (James 3:5-6, 1984 NIV)

Words spoken in Jesus' name are even more powerful (which is not the same as saying "in Jesus name") because they are a decision and action that express the Lord's choice and will.

Thanks for that Scripture! It definitely has a significance for our fates.

There is a whole area of therapeutic techniques and theory called 'NLP or NLC".. Neuro (Nerve) Linguistic (Words) .. then either Programming or Conditioning.. depending on who taught you. The subconscious is very receptive to words and their meanings. If you look at what this branch of therapy can do, it can end migraines, phobias, anxiety, alleviate symptoms of PTSD (in some cases cure it). It can really change sales. It is deeply involved in our advertising. Yes, Words have great power.

I did EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy once, which sounds very similar, and it had an immediately noticeable positive effect. :) I didn't believe it could or would do anything beforehand (after it was described to me). I'm just now thinking I need to get more!

It depends on what power is at the hand of the speaker. Such as a gun, money, armies, or nuke missiles so on and so forth. He who has no power or means has no strength to execute or keep his word, he who has means and power to execute what he says can keep his word as long as he speaks within his own capabilities. He who has the ability to keep his word and gives his word and does not, is a deceiver. And everyone is capable of belief and trust, which what is required for salvation.

That said, God has the power at hand to keep His Word, and gives His Word to those who trust and believe Him in the case of mankind. Note the mention in 1 John if one has at hand, one should give to the needy brother. God gave His Word to those who seek other than this life we have received, and delivered them from the demise of their souls, and restored them to the Life that is of Christ, form the life of dust to dust.

powerful may be the faith(the human spiritual/religious activity) represented as a "tongue" and a "mouth" in James 3

Blessings
