Hi; a lot of Christians find that faith based tattoos are proven very effective as conversation starters in witness.I don't believe in applying the "law" here and there's no condemnation for having or getting tattoos.
The context of the OT passage about marking yourself had a specific application among a specific people. You're almost certainly NOT in that group with that motive.
My personal opinion, is that a tattoo can not exceed the beauty God gave the human body. I realize that people do not take care of themselves and are over/under weight, and avail themselves of the worldly culture, which they should be apart from as new creations, but you can get one and still be a believer.
As a man, you can show me pretty much any tattoo and put it on a woman, and it will NOT enhance or exceed her personal beauty. In many cases, it ADVERSELY detracts from her appearance. Some might consider it more manly to put a symbol on a (man's) body, even "tastefully", but take a poll of most people who can give their honest opinion (not in the hearing of the wearer) and probably the majority of those polled will say that they looked better the way God made them in the first place.
People "support" others in what they do?! "How do you like my tattoo?" "Oh yeah!" But inside they're going, "I would NEVER have done that". But they're supportive of this, or a hair style and so... whatever!
As believers people shouldn't really make an idol of their own flesh. Everything you project should be of God and His kingdom (not your flesh). If you want to promote God or His kingdom, that's better. You can do that wearing shirts, jewelry, etc. just as well. It's true maybe a Godly tattoo might reach an ungodly person wearing a tattoo, but be prayerful about what you do to your body.
Your audience (whom you don't know down the road who God will place you among) might be offended by your "ink". You might have to wear long sleeve shirts in the company of some folks so you don't lose them in the natural and obscure your witness.
If a woman took a poll about a certain tattoo she thought about getting, and nobody knew who it was and could receive honest feedback, especially from men, she'd probably find that her own God given beauty well exceeded her plans for some (typically) green ink that will fade and become somewhat misshaped over time as your body shape changes. Guess what? You looked better before and the man you might end up with secretly prefers you didn't have the tattoo!
You can get temporary tattoos that you design and print. Try them on. You can actually change your message, which you CAN"T do after you commit yourself.
"Nothin's sure but this brand new tatoo." (A lifelong choice you made when you were prone to make bad choices.)
Anne: A lot of Christians - including Christian women - have had it done, like you have. Sometimes with faith based designs.AutumnAnne said:I think God knows our intent and convicts us all differently. I have two- but do I think God sees me any differently for having them? No.
tturt: Fact is now, many men have pierced ears, and many women have tattoos. What I don't understand is - most who are against tattoos have pierced ears or don't have a problem with them.
Hi there, Ms. Handmaid for Jesus. I see what you mean, but what about the verse in Leviticus preceding the one about not 'cutting for the dead' etc. which seems to say about not trimming one's beard?Hi. A long time ago before tats became as popular as they are today, I read the law forbidding tattoo marks. Though I knew we were under grace, I just decided to obey it.And I admonished my children to obey it. I don't have ink, and neither do my grown children. And I am happier for it. I know a lot of saved folks with tats. But for me and my house, we don't do it.
Handmaid for Jesus:I know lots of saved people who have tats. I just never have gotten one. My children never got one. As for the law, we are under grace since Jesus fulfilled the law and took it to the cross. Now, our righteousness is about what Jesus accomplished rather than our own works which is certainly better. He saves people who have tats.
I am married, my wife has no ink. She doesn't want any according to her but I can't see why it would bother me if she did. You're married, right? so does your wife have any? or if she doesn't but wanted one, would it bother you?
Yes, it's become very widespread as something that young people do; and faith based designs are indeed a very significant proportion.Tatoos are really popular where I live. I'd say half the kids I know between 18-22 have them or are planning to get them (guys and girls). They are especially popular with Christian guys who get religious symbols, crosses, bible verses, etc. The girls usually get something tiny and discrete ..
... maybe someone decided to get a Bible verse tattooed on his or her shoulder because that verse brought the person comfort during a hard time in their lives?

Handmaid for Jesus: I do like the way you express yourself in a nice spirit, if I may say so! My guess is regarding pierced ears also, which you mentioned, that if you have daughters or sons with pierced ears it would not really bother you. Regarding ink, it's not for everyone, although a lot of Christians do feel it's an invigorating means of witness to have a faith based design.No. IMHO they are ugly. Why deface the beautiful human body? We are fearfully and wonderfully made. To me, it is like painting graffiti on a beautiful church or temple. So no. But, if others like it, I don't condemn them for it, and neither does Jesus. Now, my ears are pierced, but it was done when I was a child. If I had to choose today, now that I know differently, they would not be pierced. This is just my opinion and I hope nobody gets offended by my saying this, but, there is no reason to be bothered by things that we did when we were sinners. Grace covers all of that. The Bible says Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
God bless you.
p.s. right or wrong, this is just my opinion, and you asked.
Sounds like earrings on daughters/sons really wouldn't bother you, then!?Cool!
