No, I never could have so easily concluded that you have zero scientific backing for your belief in sudden tectonic shifts. It is very difficult to prove a negative.

Almost always it is the soul that goes down to Sheol or down to the Pit if they meet a bad end. Only once is there a reference to the spirit going down. The spirit is a couple of times portrayed as going up, or more tentatively as possibly going up. But in general there are a lot more references to where the soul goes than where the spirit goes in the OT.
