What do believers think about tatoos? Some say they are fine, others taboo and other say it is a sin; what do you think?

Why are tatoos usually wrong?DPEP13 said:Tattoos are usually wrong (at least how people wear them today.) There are however, a few exceptions. Someone in the army who is not allowed to wear a crucifix may have a tattoo of a cross on their chest. If the tattoo is small and used for something other than just decoration then it is okay. The best advice (for Catholics), just don't get one! haha God bless.
What's wrong with placing something on your body merely for decoration or sentimental reasons? Do we not wear jewelry, style our hair, dress to flatter our appearance, apply makeup, etc? The reason many conservative Christians do not like tattoos is because there is still a stigma placed upon those who have tattoos. Everyone assumes only people in biker gangs and punks get tattoos. You'd be surprised how many average Joe's get indelibly inked these days.If the tattoo is small and used for something other than just decoration then it is okay.
Would you want graffitti on your 90 million dollar house, even if it's praises to god?Prince Lucianus said:Since you post this in the ALL MEMBERS SECTION I'll reply anyway.
I have several tattoo's and have seen many pictures in tattoo books. Many have religious topics or are about Jesus.
So, as a praise to god, I think they're okay for a Christian.

I don't mind if you do, but the bible does state that our bodies are temples...inHisgrip said:I think it is an issue that many would have to take directly to the Lord. I have 2 tattoos and don't feel that it is wrong. I did get them before knowing the Lord, however I do have plans to get 1 more. As long as its not offensive, IMO

That verse is open for personal interpretation. Some view that verse as a caution against any substance or actions that harm our bodies such as piercings, tattoos, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, drinking wine, overeating, etc. Others see it as a reason to not take drugs or smoke but will still drink the occasional glass of wine.blackmarch said:I don't mind if you do, but the bible does state that our bodies are temples...

Well then, if it doesn't apply to you, there's not much I can do to help.. It's your body.fluffy_rainbow said:But your analogy holds no water with me. I don't see my body as the temple of the Holy Spirit so it doesn't really apply to how I would feel if I owned a million dollar mansion and someone vandalized it.
Actually, I've seen some graffity artists who are very good, and who I wouldn't mind paying some money to make a painting on my 90 million dollar house (if I had one of course). This is also completely irrelevant since the thread is not about whether you want a tatoo, but whether it is sinfull to have one if you want one.Blackmarch said:Would you want graffitti on your 90 million dollar house, even if it's praises to god?
You are arguing besides the point here.Blackmarch said:I don't mind if you do, but the bible does state that our bodies are temples...
So would you want graffitti that praises god on a 90 million dollar house that's yours?

A friend of mine once told me this,
If you are willing to live with the consequences, then go ahead and do it. (in my experience I've never thought the consequences all the way through...)
My only advice/question is this; 50 years down the road are you going to still like those tattoos?
Go on and get some experience.
