  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are tatoos wrong?

Tattoos are usually wrong (at least how people wear them today.) There are however, a few exceptions. Someone in the army who is not allowed to wear a crucifix may have a tattoo of a cross on their chest. If the tattoo is small and used for something other than just decoration then it is okay. The best advice (for Catholics), just don't get one! haha God bless.

What's wrong with placing something on your body merely for decoration or sentimental reasons? Do we not wear jewelry, style our hair, dress to flatter our appearance, apply makeup, etc? The reason many conservative Christians do not like tattoos is because there is still a stigma placed upon those who have tattoos. Everyone assumes only people in biker gangs and punks get tattoos. You'd be surprised how many average Joe's get indelibly inked these days.

I have a tattoo, just got it for Mother's Day this year. I think that as long as the tattoo is not offensive, vulgar or satanic then it's fine. The only verse I've read regarding tattoo's in the Bible was this one:

Leviticus 19:28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

But Jesus took away the old law and made a new law (Romans 13:8-10), so therefore the passage in Leviticus no longer applies.

*edit: I meant "not offensive, vulgar or satanic..."

Very true, Why. Also it should be mentioned that the verse in Leviticus is strictly referring to the practices of those who worshiped idols. Within their sect they had "tribal" markings that distinguished them from other sects. They usually had symbols carved or branded into their skin.

Since you post this in the ALL MEMBERS SECTION I'll reply anyway.

I have several tattoo's and have seen many pictures in tattoo books. Many have religious topics or are about Jesus.
So, as a praise to god, I think they're okay for a Christian.

Would you want graffitti on your 90 million dollar house, even if it's praises to god?

I think it is an issue that many would have to take directly to the Lord. I have 2 tattoos and don't feel that it is wrong. I did get them before knowing the Lord, however I do have plans to get 1 more. As long as its not offensive, IMO
In Him
I don't mind if you do, but the bible does state that our bodies are temples...
So would you want graffitti that praises god on a 90 million dollar house that's yours?

That verse is open for personal interpretation. Some view that verse as a caution against any substance or actions that harm our bodies such as piercings, tattoos, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, drinking wine, overeating, etc. Others see it as a reason to not take drugs or smoke but will still drink the occasional glass of wine.

I know what others think of it...
So what is your answer to my question?
It's the question I ask myself.

But your analogy holds no water with me. I don't see my body as the temple of the Holy Spirit so it doesn't really apply to how I would feel if I owned a million dollar mansion and someone vandalized it.
Well then, if it doesn't apply to you, there's not much I can do to help.. It's your body.
A friend of mine once told me this,
If you are willing to live with the consequences, then go ahead and do it. (in my experience I've never thought the consequences all the way through...)
My only advice/question is this; 50 years down the road are you going to still like those tattoos?

Go on and get some experience.

Actually, I've seen some graffity artists who are very good, and who I wouldn't mind paying some money to make a painting on my 90 million dollar house (if I had one of course). This is also completely irrelevant since the thread is not about whether you want a tatoo, but whether it is sinfull to have one if you want one.

You are arguing besides the point here.
First, would I want graffitti. As I already said, maybe, if it is well painted. This, as well as a tattoo, is different from having my house vandalized. I choose for the painting, for which painting I want (or the artist who paints it). It is my choice, and I think my house (or in the case of a tattoo, my body) will be prettier with the painting. Tattoos are mostly (and this holds for graffitti in a number of cases) taken by someone because they think it is pretty.

And I do believe our bodies are temples. And as with temples we take care of our bodies. So we try to live healthy. And as with temples, we try to make our bodies beautifull. This means we wash our bodies, take care of proper hygiene and, in the case of tattoos, 'decorate' them. As long as no great harm is done (which I don't think there is if tattoos are used in a small amount), I see no objection if you believe your body is a temple.

I don't think tattoos are wrong, but then, I have 6 of them, so of course I don't. I think they are artistic and enhance my appearance. I think they are beautiful. Naturally I've seen many of them I wouldn't want on my body, but then I doubt that any guys around here would want the rose or violets in mine on their body either!

I do not believe that a tattoo, in and of itself, is sinful. Keeping in mind that we are to consider our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit might determine whether we desire a tattoo in the first place, and if so, what it might communicate.

I believe that a tattoo can be used as a witnessing tool in that it is permanant. I have thought periodically of having a tattoo in a visual spot as a reminder of whom I belong. For example "This Body Belongs to the LORD" or maybe "Inspected by #1 (Jesus)". Each time someone or myself see it, we can be reminded to stop and give thanks for the wonderful work of our Lord on the cross, on our behalf.

If a person has tattoos before they have accepted Jesus as their Savior, they can be a constant reminder of the change that has occured in their lives.
1 Cor 6:9-11
"9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
Son-cerely in Christ,
Nate
